Hanford Tank Waste Operations & Closure (H2C) delivers exceptional performance in safely removing, treating, and disposing of tank waste. H2C leads the nation's largest and most complex radioactive waste cleanup, including closure of the legacy waste tanks at Hanford containing 56 million gallons of radioactive and chemical waste.

H2C is seeking a highly skilled Environmental Compliance Manager to lead an environmental compliance team supporting SST Retrievals, 200 West Operations, and Tank Farm Projects. This position plays a critical role in ensuring operational compliance with federal, state, and DOE environmental requirements central to mission success and the protection of human health and the environment. Key responsibilities include:
Leadership & Team Management
Lead and support environmental compliance staff, including resource planning, assignments, performance evaluations, mentoring, and professional development.
Provide oversight of matrixed personnel engaged in field environmental compliance activities.
Regulatory & Permit Compliance
Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and requirements, including RCRA, WAC 173 303, Air Operating Permit conditions, NEPA, and DOE directives.
Manage permit compliance activities and coordinate with environmental programs, engineering, operations, project teams, and the DOE customer.
Field Environmental Compliance Oversight
Direct field environmental compliance efforts across Single-Shell Tank Retrievals, 200 West Operations, and Tank Farm Project work.
Participate in inspections, assessments, work planning, and environmental decision-making processes.
Regulatory Agency Interface
Serve as the primary point of contact for regulatory inspections, walkdowns, information requests, and follow-up actions.
Collaborate with H2C leadership, DOE, Washington State Department of Ecology, Department of Health, and other stakeholders to maintain a unified One Hanford approach.
Program & Schedule Management
Support integration of environmental compliance requirements into project schedules and mission plans.
Ensure timelines, milestones, and recovery strategies align with operational needs.
Strategic & Technical Leadership
Analyze emerging environmental compliance issues and regulatory changes affecting mission execution.
Lead corrective actions, improvements, metrics development, and environmental initiatives to strengthen compliance programs.
Additional Duties
- Perform other responsibilities as assigned by the Environmental Protection Manager to meet evolving mission needs.
Required Qualifications
Grade 20:
Bachelor's degree (BA/BS) in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science or related science discipline and eight (8) years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Grade 21:
Bachelor's degree (BA/BS) in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science or related science discipline and ten (10) years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
- Note the essential duties for this grade level are like that of the previous grade level, however the scope of responsibility is larger, and the expected level of performance is increased.
Grade 22:
Bachelor's degree (BA/BS) in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science or related science discipline and a minimum of twelve (12) years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
- Note the essential duties for this grade level are like that of the previous grade level, however the scope of responsibility is significantly larger, and the expected level of performance is greatly increased.
Desired Qualifications
Demonstrated ability to build strong teams, collaborate effectively, and solve complex issues.
Experience in regulatory inspections, field compliance, and negotiations with external stakeholders.
Sound judgment, transparency, and a commitment to safe, compliant work practices.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Certifications in environmental or hazardous materials.
Compensation & Benefits
In accordance with the company's philosophy on compensation for exempt and salaried non-exempt employees, H2C takes into consideration a variety of factors when determining initial grade and salary to include assigned job scope and responsibility, a candidate's qualifications as compared to internal comparators performing in a similar role, and the external labor market. A salary offer will be made at the appropriate grade level and within the targeted hiring range posted according to these factors. Note a candidate's prior salary history will not be taken into consideration.
Hiring Range Minimum: $131,888
Hiring Range Maximum: $214,288
