CNC Engineering Manager

The CNC Engineering Manager is responsible for leading all aspects of CNC engineering, including programming, process development, and technical optimization of machining operations. This role focuses on advancing multi-axis CNC capabilities, improving machining efficiency, and ensuring robust, repeatable manufacturing processes that meet stringent quality, cost, and delivery targets.

As the primary technical authority for CNC operations, the CNC Engineering Manager drives innovation in toolpath strategy, automation, and process standardization across milling, turning, and laser cutting systems. This position plays a critical role in new product introduction (NPI), continuous improvement, and cost reduction initiatives while ensuring compliance with AS9100 standards and enhancing overall manufacturing competitiveness.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development, validation, and optimization of advanced CNC programs for multi-axis mills, lathes, and laser cutting equipment.

  • Establish best-in-class CNC programming standards, including toolpath strategies, feeds and speeds, and machine utilization.

  • Develop and implement standardized setups, tooling solutions, and work instructions to reduce setup time and improve repeatability.

  • Serve as the subject matter expert for CNC machining, providing technical leadership in complex programming and process challenges.

  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on reducing cycle times, increasing spindle uptime, and improving operator-to-machine ratios.

  • Analyze machining processes to identify bottlenecks and implement solutions such as automation, advanced tooling, and optimized cutting strategies.

  • Lead new product introductions by developing efficient, scalable CNC machining processes and ensuring design for manufacturability (DFM).

  • Collaborate closely with estimating, design engineering, and production teams to optimize part manufacturability and cost.

  • Partner with maintenance to improve machine reliability, preventative maintenance strategies, and overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).

  • Monitor and drive performance metrics including cycle time, scrap rate, tool life, and OEE.

  • Lead root cause analysis and corrective actions for machining and quality issues, with a strong focus on process capability.

  • Provide training, mentorship, and technical development for CNC programmers, manufacturing engineers, and machinists.

  • Supervise and develop CNC engineering and programming teams, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.

  • Foster a culture of technical excellence, accountability, safety, and continuous improvement.

  • Ensure all CNC processes comply with AS9100 and customer-specific requirements.

  • Maintain comprehensive CNC process documentation, including setup sheets, tooling lists, and program revision control.

  • Support internal and external audits through strong process control and documentation traceability.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field (or equivalent hands-on CNC experience).

  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in CNC machining, including at least 3 years in a leadership or supervisory role.

  • Deep expertise in multi-axis CNC programming using platforms such as Mastercam, NX, or Fusion 360.

  • Strong understanding of advanced machining techniques, cutting tool technologies, and high-efficiency toolpaths.

  • Proven success in CNC process optimization, cycle time reduction, and cost improvement initiatives.

  • Working knowledge of AS9100 and aerospace manufacturing quality systems.

  • Proficiency in CAD/CAM software and strong understanding of GD&T.

  • Experience integrating automation solutions within CNC environments is highly desirable.

  • Familiarity with secondary processes such as laser cutting, stamping, or finishing operations.

  • Experience with ERP/MES systems for production and process tracking.

  • Lean manufacturing and/or Six Sigma certification preferred.

  • Excellent leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills with a strong technical focus.
