Northrop Grumman Space Sector has an opening for a qualified, mission‑oriented Principal Mechanical Design Integration Engineer – Level 3 to join our team of diverse professionals in the Structures Design, Analysis, and Integration (SDAI) department (Western Region Engineering). This position is located in Redondo Beach, California .
As a Mechanical Design Integration Engineer, you will be responsible for developing architecture layouts, structures, thermal‑management solutions, and electrical interfaces; integrating subcontracted bus and payload components; and ensuring successful testing and delivery of the space vehicle.
Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Manage cost and schedule associated with your statement of work (SOW).
Resolve system‑level issues and constraints, such as thermal, dynamics, and critical clearances.
Perform requirements definition, conceptual design, preliminary/layout work, detailed design, drawing release, design‑review presentations, and support fabrication/integration.
Execute bus equipment layout, payload layout, and preliminary cable and harness routing (DC, RF, waveguide).
Collaborate closely with stress, manufacturing, M&P, and test teams to develop design requirements, define structural load paths, create CAD models, and prepare engineering drawings for flight and structural test articles.
Maintain source‑control drawings, interface control drawings, and installation drawings.
Lead and participate in system‑level trades to ensure the vehicle design satisfies all physical, mechanical, and environmental requirements while accommodating payload, power, propulsion, thermal, communications, and attitude‑control system needs.
Support program milestone reviews (SRR, PDR, CDR, IDR, etc.) and gate‑closure/lien‑closure activities.
Mentor and train early‑career engineers.
Provide integration and test (I&T) sustaining support.
Create a culture of trust.
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) discipline with 5+ years of mechanical engineering experience OR Master’s degree in a STEM discipline with 3+ years of mechanical engineering experience
Prior work experience in space subsystems design and integration, mechanical design integration, or related engineering experience.
Proven experience with Class A space subsystems design and integration.
Proficiency in harness and wire routing, GD&T and mechanical interface drawing definition.
Must have active SCI Access at time of application
Preferred Qualifications:
Proven experience with spacecraft integration and verification testing
Proficiency in CATIA V5, CATIA 3DX
Active DoD Top Secret Clearance and SCI access

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
