Cook 1 (MTC Dining)

Job Summary: Provides culinary support for MTC Dining under the direction of culinary leadership. Ensures food is prepared and handled in accordance with established quality, safety, and service standards.

 

*Note: This is a part-time position (28 hours per week).  *

 

What you'll do in this role:

Culinary Operations

  • Prepares food using standardized recipes and established procedures.

  • Maintains proper food handling, storage, and preservation practices, including FIFO and allergen protocols.

  • Ensures cleanliness and sanitation of work areas in compliance with health and MTC Dining standards.

  • Maintains organization of storage areas, ensuring all items are properly labeled, dated, and rotated.

     

Operations Support

  • Prioritizes production tasks under the direction of Cook II or assigned leadership to support efficient kitchen operations and service.

     

Supervision

  • Provides guidance to student employees as assigned, ensuring adherence to MTC Dining standards and procedures.

     

What qualifies you for this role?

Required:

  • A firm commitment to the Mission of BYU

  • A minimum of 1 year of experience in Food Service

     

Preferred

  • Culinary School and at least two years' experience in Food Service

     

Physical Exam and Lift Test Required

Physical Effort

  • Moderate -- Physical effort represented by frequent handling of medium weight objects (approx. 20-50 lbs.) and materials, or use of medium weight hand tools. May require climbing and working from ladders or in awkward positions.

Environment

  • Periodic exposure to unfavorable conditions because of unavoidable need to be in variable temperatures or wet environments, etc.

Hazards

  • Minimal existing or potential hazards

Typical Physical Efforts, Environmental Factors, and Hazards

  • Operation of kitchen equipment such as slicer, mixer, grills, oven, tilt skillet, freezers, knives etc. (5+ hours, daily)

  • Work in freezer with temps at or near -20 degrees (20 minutes, twice daily, gloves/coat/headgear provided)

  • Move boxes weighing up to 50 lbs to various parts of the kitchen (30 minutes, multiple times daily)

     

Pay Grade: 47

Typical Starting Pay: $19.00 to $24.00 per hour

Candidates with very significant work-related experience may receive an offer higher than the posted typical range. *
