Provo City is looking for a part-time Children's Librarian to perform entry-level professional library service providing programs, activities, and general services for library patrons, specifically for children ages 0-12 and those interested in children's materials and services. What is the compensation?

Pay Rate: $19.00 per hour. Payment will be made by direct deposit.

What are the main duties?

  • Assist patrons in selecting, locating, and using library materials and equipment, including books, periodicals, and computerized information.

  • Create grade-level reading lists, as well as other bibliographies to assist children with research and reading materials.

  • Work with the Children's Services Manager in planning and executing library programs, activities, and services.

  • Resolve or refer problems to proper authorities for resolution.

  • Build and maintain relationships with other employees, the general public, local schools, and other public libraries.

  • Stay up to date on the latest trends and professional changes in the field.

  • Maintain files and perform research.

  • Attend conferences, seminars, and other training sessions.

    What are the requirements to apply?

    Provo City will honor equivalent combinations of experience.

  • A Bachelor’s degree OR 2 years of professional librarian experience.

  • Basic computer skills including a working knowledge of the Internet.

  • Experience working with the public and with children is desirable.

    What is the schedule?

    Twenty-two (22) hours per week, flexible within hours of operation. Every other weekend and two evening shifts a week are required.

    What are the physical and environmental factors?

    This work requires pushing book carts; bending and shifting to rearrange library materials; long periods of answering telephones and entering data on a computer; long periods of standing or sitting at a computer or desk; communicating with a wide variety of patrons; and occasionally lifting and carrying heavy library materials. Work location is in an open area subject to constant public contact, telephone calls, and frequent noise. May include exposure to high-stress situations or environments, including contact with the public in confrontational or unpleasant circumstances.

    What is the selection process?

    This position will be closed, end of day April 26, 2026. Applications will be reviewed in the order they are received. Applicants must meet the minimum requirements listed above to be eligible for consideration. If selected for hire, candidate will be required to successfully pass a drug screen and criminal background check. Non-disclosure may result in dismissal. Applicants with unsatisfactory drug screen results will be ineligible for appointment or application to any Provo City position for a minimum period of six (6) months.
