AON Flood Hazard Modeller (Coastal & Inland, 2D) in Prague, Czech Republic
This role is part of Impact Forecasting, Aon’s catastrophe model development center. The global Impact Forecasting team of 140 members based in 5 offices around the world (Prague, London, Chicago, Singapore, and Bangalore) consists of scientists, model and software developers, and client services colleagues. The main function of the team is to develop, maintain, support, and promote the use of catastrophe models for various natural and human-made perils including flood, windstorm, earthquake, fire, and terrorism.
Flood Hazard Modeller (Coastal & Inland, 2D)
Aon Impact Forecasting develops innovative catastrophe models that estimate and analyze damage caused by natural hazards for the global insurance and reinsurance market. Our models cover river and coastal floods worldwide, as well as earthquakes, hurricanes, storm surges, tsunamis and other perils.
We are looking for a Flood Hazard Modeller for our Prague’s team who wants to grow into an expert in coastal and inland flood modelling in 2D and flood risk for the (re)insurance industry.
What the day will look like
You will work in a team of experienced modellers and GIS experts, and step by step take responsibility for:
Building and running 2D coastal and inland flood models (e.g. TUFLOW, SFINCS, HEC‑RAS) under the guidance of senior colleagues
Collecting, checking and processing hydrological, hydraulic and spatial data using GIS tools (ArcGIS/ArcMap, QGIS)
Representing flood protection measures (levees, reservoirs, barriers, etc.) in models and helping to evaluate the impact of their presence or failure
Using Python to automate data processing, GIS workflows and post‑processing of model results
Helping to prepare outputs for integration into our catastrophe models and databases
Working closely with GIS specialists and AI analysts on research and production tasks
Contributing ideas to improve tools, workflows and model performance
Collaborating both in the office and remotely, using modern communication and project tools
You will receive mentoring and support, but we expect you to be curious, proactive and ready to take ownership of your learning.
Skills and experience that will lead to success
University degree focused on water, environment, civil engineering, hydrology, or a related technical field
2-3 years of experience is an advantage
Strong technical mindset and interest in hydraulic / hydrological modelling and flood risk
Very good English communication skills; other languages (especially Spanish) are welcome
Curiosity, reliability and enthusiasm for working in an international, multidisciplinary team in a hybrid work environment
Good knowledge of GIS tools (ArcGIS and/or QGIS), ideally including raster analysis
Basic understanding of SQL or other relational databases is an advantage
Any exposure to AI / machine learning (e.g. university projects, courses, personal projects) is a plus, but not mandatory
Practical experience with Python, for example:
Data processing (NumPy, pandas, etc. – or similar)
Automating GIS or modelling tasks
Basic scripting and debugging skills
