DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: Employees in this class regularly drive and operate the heavier and more complex types of trucks and construction equipment which require intermediate to advanced operating skills. Employees also perform a variety of laboring activities in connection with such operations and are responsible for the safe and economical operation and care of their equipment on assigned tasks. Specific instructions are given by a supervisor or crew leader who makes periodic inspections of the work in progress. Supervision occasionally may be exercised over a group of workers on a project. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: Typical work activities for incumbents in this title include those listed below in addition to those work activities performed by lower level titles in the series. They are indicative of the level and types of activities performed by incumbents in this title. They are not meant to be all inclusive and do not preclude a supervisor from assigning activities not listed which could be reasonably expected to be performed by an employee in this title. Candidates must possess a valid New York State Commercial Driver's license of the appropriate level at time of appointment and to maintain position. An appointing authority may require that this license contain a CDL endorsement for tanker vehicles and contain no restrictions other than those relating to personal physical conditions. Such restrictions will be reviewed on a case by case basis for compatibility with job duties and will not be an automatic bar to employment.
