Heavy Equipment Operator

Job Description

The Heavy Equipment Operator safely operates a variety of heavy machinery, including excavators, dozers, skid steers, and front-end loaders, to support construction projects. This role focuses on grading sites, digging trenches, building roads, and performing related earthwork tasks on active construction sites.

Responsibilities

  • Operate excavators, dozers, skid steers, front-end loaders, and other heavy equipment in a safe and efficient manner.

  • Grade construction sites to specified elevations and contours, ensuring accuracy and proper drainage.

  • Dig trenches for utilities and other infrastructure, following project plans and safety standards.

  • Assist in building and maintaining roads and access paths on construction sites.

  • Inspect equipment before and after use to identify and report any maintenance or safety issues.

  • Follow all site safety procedures and use appropriate protective measures when working around heavy equipment.

  • Coordinate with site supervisors and crew members to complete tasks according to project schedules.

  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, including equipment and surrounding site conditions.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience operating heavy equipment such as excavators, dozers, skid steers, and front-end loaders.

  • Proven experience with site grading to meet project specifications.

  • Hands-on experience digging trenches for utilities and related construction work.

  • Strong understanding of safe operating practices around heavy equipment and active construction sites.

  • Ability to read and follow basic directions from site plans and supervisors.

  • Reliable work habits with the ability to follow instructions and complete tasks with minimal supervision.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working in general construction environments.

  • Familiarity with scrapers and other types of construction equipment.

  • Ability to work effectively as part of a construction crew.

  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.

Work Environment

This role takes place on active construction sites working around heavy equipment and earthmoving operations. The Heavy Equipment Operator spends most of the day outdoors in varying weather conditions and must be comfortable working on uneven terrain and near moving machinery. The position follows a Monday through Friday work schedule, with duties centered on operating and maneuvering heavy equipment safely in a busy jobsite environment. Appropriate workwear suitable for a construction site, including safety gear as required, is expected.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Post Falls, ID.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $37.00/hr.
