Position Summary

This Street Maintenance Crew Leader leads and directs crews in the preparation for paving and the repair of roadway surfaces. They will direct and train a diverse work force in the safe and efficient work methods of roadwork, including proper equipment operation. They will inspect streets and determine the appropriate work zone traffic control. They will be directly responsible for durable and effective repairs and maintenance of the City streets. The work will conform to City standards and follow industry best practices. The Street Maintenance Crew Leader will operate rollers, self-propelled paving machines and other equipment. They will be responsible for keeping work records, handling on-site public relations, and producing various reports.

Important Highlights

  • This position is considered an essential position during inclement weather, natural disasters, and other emergencies

  • This position is a member of PBOT's 24 Hour Response Team

  • May require after-hour, evening, weekend, and holiday response

  • During an emergency, this position is expected to report to work as soon as possible to help ensure the essential operations of the City's transportation infrastructure

What you’ll get to do:

  • Direct crews on the Street Maintenance Team

  • Direct and train diverse work crews in safe and efficient work methods and proper paving machinery equipment operation (i.e. pavers, rollers, and street milling)

  • Inspect City assets to determine extent of work required

  • Maintenance and cleaning or repair of City owned assets

  • Keep records of accomplishments and create maintenance reports

  • Handle on-site public relations

To Qualify

The following minimum qualifications are required for this position:

  • Ability to lead, motivate, encourage, train, and evaluate individuals within several classifications with different levels of experience and seniority.

  • Experience with infrastructure maintenance paving operations and roadway repairs (5 years minimum experience preferred).

  • Experience dealing tactfully and effectively with members of the public as well as your coworkers/crew

  • Experience with data entry on a variety of smart phones/iPads and strong writing and documentation skills

  • Knowledge of and ability to apply workplace and OSHA rules and/or guidelines

  • Ability to apply diversity, equity, and inclusion in a leadership position.

  • Submit a “complete” five-year court-certified Driver’s Abstract of Driving Record (obtained at applicant’s expense) upon request.

  • Possess a Commercial Driver's License (CDL-Class A) at time of hire.

  • An invitation will be sent via email. Out-of-town candidates will be required to travel to participate in phase II.

  • Phase II is tentatively scheduled for week of May 18, 2026

  • A photo ID will be required for admittance to the test.

  • All Health and Safety protocols must be followed.

Step 7: Pre-Employment Exam – Preplacement Physical Examination: To Be Determined

As part of the conditional job offer, candidates must complete a Prehire Evaluation during the hiring process/probationary period. The Prehire Evaluation may consist of a medical exam, screenings, and a physical capacities test (PCT) required for work clearance and safety compliance. The PCT measures physical ability through job-related tasks such as lifting, carrying, climbing, shoveling, and repetitive movements. Unless already employed in a City position requiring a similar or more demanding PCT, candidates must pass all required tasks to proceed with employment.
