Thompson Pump and Manufacturing Co., Inc. MANUFACTURING ENGINEER in Port Orange, Florida

Summary: The Manufacturing Engineer is responsible for solving engineering-related issues on the production floor, improving manufacturing processes, and supporting the planning and execution of engineered pump system builds. This role partners closely with Production, Engineering, Quality, Purchasing, and Sales to ensure build packages are accurate, routings and documentation are complete, and assembly operations execute safely, efficiently, and on schedule.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a primary engineering resource for day-to-day production floor support, troubleshooting build challenges and resolving technical questions quickly and safely.

  • Provide hands-on engineering support to address fit-up issues, rework decisions, assembly sequence concerns, and documentation gaps.

  • Support Quality in evaluating discrepancies on incoming material and determining appropriate disposition (use-as-is, rework, reject, supplier correction).

  • Partner with Production and Quality to identify root cause of recurring build problems and implement corrective actions.

  • Review and validate build planning packages for completeness and accuracy, including pick lists, routings, work instructions, drawings, and configuration-specific requirements.

  • Ensure routings include required operational instructions and that exceptions are captured based on configuration (engine, canopy/open unit, paint requirements, etc.).

  • Confirm correct frame selection and that associated drawings and bracket callouts are included in the build package.

  • Communicate corrections and clarifications to planning and cross-functional partners to keep builds moving on schedule.

  • Take increasing ownership of planning systems and planning health metrics over time (readiness, backlog, late kits, documentation gaps, recurring issues).

  • Support Engineering Change Requests (ECRs) by gathering information, preparing content for review, and participating in change evaluation meetings.

  • Coordinate drawing change requests and support drafting priorities, ensuring requests are valid, well-defined, and accurately completed.

  • Review vendor drawing submittals for dimensional accuracy and compliance to design intent; communicate approvals or required revisions.

  • Participate in PDM workflows for model and drawing approval; validate completeness and route back for correction as needed.

  • Maintain and report manufacturing engineering metrics supporting GEMBA boards and production readiness.

  • Assist in collecting planning/backlog data from ERP/CRM systems and translate into actionable insights for production and leadership.

  • Present readiness indicators during regular operational cadence meetings, highlighting risks, constraints, and corrective actions.

  • Identify improvement opportunities related to routing accuracy, planning throughput, BOM quality, drawing revision turnaround, and recurring floor issues.

  • Provide technical support to Purchasing, Sales, Service, and Parts teams as needed (application questions, part identification, drawing interpretation, supplier communication).

  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to strengthen manufacturing readiness and reduce build interruptions.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

    Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Industrial Engineering

  • 3–7 years experience in a manufacturing, production-support, or manufacturing engineering role (heavy equipment, pump systems, fabrication, or similar preferred).

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to diagnose and resolve production issues quickly.

  • Experience interpreting engineering drawings, routings, BOMs, and production work instructions.

  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, in-person production environment with frequent cross-functional interactions.

  • Experience with build planning, production order workflows, or ERP systems (Dynamics NAV/Business Central strongly preferred).

  • Familiarity with engineering change workflows, controlled documentation, and configuration management.

  • Experience with operational metrics, dashboards, and continuous improvement.

  • Experienced SOLIDWORKS user

  • Exposure to vendor drawing review and supplier technical coordination.
