Temporary Summer Laborer

Department: Streets and Drainage (and other departments as required)

Minimum Age Requirement: 17 years of age as of hire date

Other Requirements: Class C Texas Drivers License

Work Period: June through August, 2026

Work Schedule:Typically, 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., Monday - Friday

Position Summary

The City of Port Neches is seeking motivated and dependable individuals for Temporary Summer Laborer positions within the Public Works Department. This role primarily supports the Streets and Drainage Division, with additional assistance provided to other departments as needed. Under general supervision, employees will perform a variety of manual labor tasks to support maintenance, repair, and improvement of city infrastructure and public spaces.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Assist with maintenance and repair of city streets, including patching potholes, asphalt work, and debris removal
• Support drainage operations by cleaning ditches, culverts, storm drains, and related infrastructure
• Perform general labor tasks such as mowing, trimming, and maintaining public rights-of-way and city properties
• Load, unload, and transport materials, tools, and equipment
• Operate basic hand tools and power equipment safely and effectively
• Assist skilled workers and full-time staff on various projects
• Maintain a clean and safe work environment
• Follow all safety policies and procedures
• Provide support to other city departments as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

• Must be at least 17 years of age
• Ability to perform physically demanding work in outdoor environments, including exposure to heat, humidity, and inclement weather
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly
• Strong work ethic and reliability
• Ability to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a team

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior experience in construction, maintenance, landscaping, or public works is a plus
• Valid Texas drivers license

Working Conditions

• Primarily outdoor work in varying weather conditions
• Exposure to dust, noise, and heavy equipment
• Frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, and manual labor

Schedule

• Typically Monday through Friday, with possible early mornings or extended hours as needed

Compensation

• $12.50
