Utility Locator

Overview

Join a leading Utility Engineering team as an entry-level Utility Locator Technician and build a long-term career in the infrastructure industry. This is a year-round field position offering hands-on training in utility locating, designating, and modern surveying technologies. Key Responsibilities

  • Locate and document underground utilities in the field.

  • Work with crews to identify, locate, and occasionally expose sewer and underground systems.

  • Operate SUE utility locating and designating equipment, including pipe/cable locators and non-destructive vacuum excavation tools.

  • Use a variety of tools such as jackhammers, pogo tampers, concrete saws, compressor blowers, vacuum hoses, air lances, and standard hand tools.

  • Maintain accurate daily logs, including basic mathematical calculations.

  • Assist with traffic control setup and safety procedures under staff direction.

  • Support survey and data collection tasks as part of overall crew operations.

  • Perform daily equipment inspections and routine maintenance.

Essential Skills

  • Basic math proficiency

  • Experience using hand and power tools

  • Minimum 3 months of construction experience

  • Surveying or utility locating experience

Additional Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED

  • Valid driver’s license

  • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs

  • At least 6 months of outdoor work experience in varying weather conditions

  • 6+ months of survey experience (preferred)

Work Environment

This is a field-focused position requiring comfort working outdoors in all weather conditions.

  • Schedule: Monday–Friday, starting at 7:00 AM until work is completed

  • Equipment: Vacuum trucks, excavating tools, and other large machinery

  • Travel: Approximately 50% travel to job sites

  • Location: Office based in Fridley, MN (team of 15), but majority of time spent in the field

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Plymouth, MN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $21.50 - $25.00/hr.
