Actalent Survey Cad Technician in Plymouth, Michigan

Job Title: Survey CAD TechnicianJob Description

The Survey CAD Technician uses AutoCAD and Civil 3D to support civil engineers and surveyors by producing high-quality design and drafting deliverables. This role focuses on creating routine layouts, detailed drawings, sketches, and diagrams for survey, municipal, and land development projects. Initially, you will support a large, high-profile survey project and then transition to contributing to a variety of projects across multiple markets.

Responsibilities

  • Produce accurate drawings using computer-assisted design and drafting equipment and software, primarily Civil 3D and AutoCAD 2D.

  • Interpret and analyze sketches, drawings, notes, and verbal instructions from engineers, surveyors, technicians, and designers to determine the most appropriate views, detail drawings, and supplementary information needed to complete assignments.

  • Collaborate closely with engineers, surveyors, technicians, project coordinators, project managers, and support staff to develop drawings and layout data.

  • Revise and modify existing drawings as required to reflect design changes, field information, and client feedback.

  • Plot, organize, and assemble project-related documents to support project delivery and record-keeping.

  • Apply knowledge of surveying, various machines, engineering practices, mathematical formulas, and physical sciences to produce clear and accurate drawings.

  • Follow established company standards, CAD methodologies, and drafting procedures to ensure consistency and quality across all deliverables.

  • Maintain strong internal and external client relationships by being responsive, professional, and detail-oriented.

  • Work toward achieving performance objectives and financial metrics as defined by the organization’s key performance indicators.

  • Support a major survey project as an initial focus, then contribute to additional survey, municipal, and land development projects as needs evolve.

  • Perform all other related drafting and support duties as assigned to ensure successful project outcomes.

Essential Skills

  • At least 2 years of experience using Civil 3D for CAD design and drafting.

  • Proficiency with AutoCAD for 2D drafting and design tasks.

  • Working knowledge of survey projects or basic survey principles and practices.

  • Ability to interpret and translate engineering and survey sketches, notes, and verbal instructions into accurate CAD drawings.

  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in drafting and document preparation.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with engineers, surveyors, technicians, and project staff.

  • Solid understanding of fundamental engineering and surveying concepts, including basic mathematical and geometric principles.

  • Ability to follow established CAD standards, methodologies, and workflows.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • 2 or more years of specific experience as a Survey CAD Technician.

  • Experience working on survey projects within a dedicated survey department.

  • Experience with land development and municipal civil design projects.

  • Familiarity with MicroStation OpenRoads Designer (ORD) or similar civil design platforms.

  • Experience supporting projects in markets such as power and energy, municipal, land development, or oil and gas.

  • Interest in working in a dynamic, solution-focused environment that encourages innovative thinking and continuous improvement.

  • Motivation to contribute to a purpose-driven team focused on client-centric solutions and community development.

Work Environment

This position is primarily office-based, with standard Monday through Friday workdays and flexible hours totaling approximately 40–50 hours per week. The first 90 days are fully in-office, five days per week, to support onboarding and training. After this initial period, you may work in a hybrid arrangement, typically three days in the office and two days remote each week. You will use modern CAD tools, including Civil 3D and AutoCAD, and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team that combines the capabilities of a larger firm with the agility and responsiveness of a smaller organization. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Plymouth, MI.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $26.00 - $32.00/hr.
