Omaha Public Power District Electrical Engineer II - Cass County in Plattsmouth, Nebraska

Essential Duties

We are seeking a Power Generation Engineer to provide technical leadership and system expertise within our generating stations. In this role, you will be accountable for the health, reliability, and performance of assigned plant systems and equipment. You'll serve as a key technical resource-conducting system health monitoring, diagnosing complex issues, supporting plant modifications, and ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements. While primarily based at one station, you may support any OPPD generating facility as needed.

This position is ideal for an engineer who thrives on problem-solving, enjoys hands-on technical work, and is motivated by improving system reliability, safety, and operational excellence. You will lead multidisciplinary teams, apply engineering principles to real-world challenges, and play a critical role in maintaining the performance and material condition of OPPD's generation assets.

Assigned accountability for specific plant systems and equipment and provides timely technical on-site support for station activities, plant modifications, performance analysis, technical review of operating reports, evaluation of system performance, and complex technical analysis to troubleshoot and resolve plant issues. Position is primarily based at one station but may be called upon to serve any of the generating stations. Performance is measured by the reliability, material condition, safety, economics, and performance of assigned systems and projects.

  • Under technical direction, perform system health monitoring including identification of critical systems or components required for reliable plant operation, identify trends and issues adversely affecting reliability and performance, and develop corrective action plans for resolution as part of the reliability centered maintenance program.

  • Perform analysis or diagnostic evaluations while adapting and applying broad engineering principles and practices based on education and experience within own engineering discipline.

  • Accountable for detailed understanding of assigned systems including the principles of operations, typical operating configuration, historical issues, maintenance strategy, and modes of failure.

  • Apply basic project management principles to support the execution of large, complex, or time sensitive work.

  • Develop and lead complex troubleshooting of emergent plant problems whose resolution exceeds the skill of the Maintenance and Operations staff using broad techniques and engineering principles.

  • Accountable for cursory understanding of all applicable governmental code, industry standards, and environmental regulations.

  • Accountable for the detailed understanding of internal procedures, policies, and reliability standards.

  • Accountable for safety, reliability, operability and economy of assigned tasks and projects.

    Required Qualifications

  • Four (4) year Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree

  • Two (2) years of equivalent engineering work experience. Master's degree may be considered for up to two years of experience.

  • Knowledgeable in the various regulations and codes, which apply to the specific engineering discipline.

  • Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills with the ability to adapt the communication for varying audiences

  • A valid driver's license

    Desired:

  • Familiarity and experience with Ventyx (Asset Suite), Cognos, AutoDesk (CAD, Inventor, Vault), Bentley MicroStation, PeopleSoft

  • Engineer in Training (EIT/FE), PE License or other relevant industry-level education / certification

  • Degree in engineering discipline related to power generation

  • Master's degree in engineering or business.

  • Demonstrated capabilities of researching engineering and operational issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and presenting recommendations.

  • Advanced MS Office Professional Skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).

  • Electric utility power plant operation and maintenance exposure.

  • Understanding of codes and regulations applicable to power generation facilities

  • Thorough knowledge of OPPD's T&D, Substation and Generation system.

    Non-Shift Work

    Time Demands:

    Non-Essential Position: This position may be required to report to work beyond the normal shift to support the restoration of normal business operations.

    This position must be available for overtime work and callouts as required to ensure continuance of efficient operation.

    This position must maintain 24-hour availability for technical and professional assistance, emergency response, and direction of remedial action in response to such emergencies, as well as maintain availability as required for on-call duty .

    Work Location:

    Office: Work will be performed in a modern office environment amid normal conditions of dust, odors, fumes, and noises.

    Field: Work will be performed outside in a wide variety of weather conditions (snow, rain, heat, cold, wind, etc.), terrain, and other natural environmental hazards as well as pollen and other airborne allergens.

    Generation Plant: Work will be performed inside with exposure to industrial building conditions and will be exposed to extreme temperatures, odors, dust, gases, poor ventilation and exposure to sounds. Noise levels may require shouting to be heard.

    Work will be performed in high traffic environments.

    Will work around energies high voltage electrical equipment.

    Will work in construction areas that present many physical hazards.

    Physical Demands:

    Minimal physical effort typically found in clerical work. Primarily sedentary, may occasionally lift and carry light objects. Walking and/or standing as needed and minimal.

    Light to moderate physical effort that includes frequent standing or walking or maintaining arms and hands in the same position for repetitive tasks. Frequently works with light objects and light hand tools.

    Moderate to considerable physical effort that includes working from ladders in awkward positions. Frequent use of light or medium weight objects (e.g., 25-50 lbs.) and use of medium weight tools.

    Strenuous to extreme physical effort that includes frequent use of heavy objects (e.g., 50+ lbs.) and may also use heavy tools or require strenuous application in awkward positions.

Minimum: $90,759

Midpoint: $113,449
