Job Description: Assistant Cook (ATF -- 2380 Compliant)
Position Title: Assistant Cook
Department: Food Services / Program Support Reports To: Cook/Center Director
Salary: $15 to $20 hourly FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Job Goal
To support the delivery of safe, nutritious meals while promoting consumer participation, independence, and well-being in a manner consistent with Chapter 2380 regulations.
Position Summary
Assistant Cook supports meal preparation and service at an Adult Training Facility while promoting a safe, sanitary, and inclusive environment. This role actively supports adult consumers with intellectual and developmental disabilities by encouraging participation in meal-related activities, fostering independence, and ensuring compliance with 25 Pa. Code Chapter 2380 standards.
Essential Job Functions
Food Preparation & Service
- Assist in the preparation, cooking, and serving of meals in accordance with approved menus and dietary guidelines
- Follow standardized recipes and portion controls
- Ensure meals meet nutritional and special dietary requirements (e.g., allergies, modified textures)
- Maintain proper food temperatures and safe food handling practices
Sanitation & Safety
- Maintain a clean, sanitary, and organized kitchen environment in accordance with health regulations
- Follow all food safety procedures (handwashing, glove use, cross-contamination prevention)
- Ensure proper storage, labeling, and rotation of food items
- Report any safety hazards immediately
Consumer Support & Engagement
- Support consumers in participating in meal preparation and kitchen-related activities as appropriate
- Encourage skill development in cooking, cleaning, and safe food handling
- Provide supervision to ensure consumer safety in kitchen areas
- Promote dignity, choice, and independence in all interactions
Documentation & Communication
- Accurately document participation, incidents, and relevant observations
- Communicate effectively with team members regarding dietary needs and consumer supports
- Participate in team meetings and training as required
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Prior food service experience preferred
- Experience working with individuals with intellectual disabilities is preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of basic food safety and sanitation practices
- Ability to follow directions and standardized recipes
- Ability to support individuals with varying levels of ability
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
Training Requirements (2380 Compliance)
- Completion of required orientation and annual training per Chapter 2380
- Food safety and sanitation training (ServSafe)
- Behavioral support and crisis intervention training
- Consumer rights and abuse prevention training
- First Aid/CPR certification (if required by agency policy)
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand for extended periods
- Ability to lift up to 30 pounds
- Ability to perform repetitive motions (cutting, stirring, cleaning)
- Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations
Work Environment
- Kitchen and food preparation areas within an Adult Training Facility
- Exposure to hot surfaces, kitchen equipment, and cleaning chemicals
- Interaction with consumers requiring supervision and support
