Job Information
Carnegie Mellon University AI Solutions Architect - Computing Services in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Carnegie Mellon University has been shaping the field of artificial intelligence since the very beginning. Now we're asking a new question: how should a university that helped pioneer AI, optimally use it across our own education, research, and operations? We're figuring that out — and we want you to join us in Computing Services, the central IT group, in crafting the solution.
This role sits at the center of that work. You'll help turn ideas into solutions to be built, run pilots that prove or disprove potential outcomes and help establish patterns to scale AI responsibly across a complex institution.
We're not looking for someone who just draws diagrams. We need a partner who can move from strategy conversations with leadership to hands-on prototyping with our developers and getting solutions into the hands of our users. Sound like you?
What You'll Do:
You'll define AI strategy alongside senior leadership, connecting institutional goals to practical technical roadmaps. When opportunities emerge, you'll design the solution architectures and build or deploy proofs-of-concept systems that validate feasibility. You won't be doing everything from scratch; the right solution may be working with an existing product and making it productive for our customers.
Bridging gaps is a huge part of this role. You'll translate business needs into requirements and partner with other teams to get solutions deployed. You'll work closely with security and compliance colleagues to navigate privacy, data protection, and responsible use — including identifying bias and ensuring we meet ethical standards.
We also need you to think beyond individual projects. You'll help us build the foundation for scalable AI: reference architectures, reusable patterns, integration standards, and operational playbooks that make the next project easier than the last.
And because none of this matters if it stays siloed, you'll share what you learn — through workshops, training sessions, and community events that help colleagues across campus adopt AI effectively.
What You'll Bring:
We're looking for 5–8 years of experience in AI/ML solution design, technical consulting, or architecture-focused roles. You've taken AI projects from idea through pilot to production — not just strategy decks, but working systems. You're comfortable with cloud platforms and can design solutions that span on-premise and cloud environments.
Communication matters here. Can you explain technical trade-offs to a someone who's never written code? What about the business needs to someone who only lives in Python? Can you write documentation and articles that people will actually reference six months later? We need it all.
You are at ease when facing ambiguity. We're building new capabilities, which means you'll often propose the path forward rather than follow one. That should excite you, not stress you out!
A bachelor's degree or relevant experience is required. A master's degree or comparable experience is considered a plus.
