Your Impact at SAM
The SUE (Subsurface Utility Engineering) Field Technician III is responsible for the accurate designation, documentation, and mapping of utilities in rural and urban environments. This role requires advanced technical expertise, leadership in the field, and coordination with clients, utility owners, and service providers to ensure high-quality project outcomes.
Key Responsibilities:
Utility Designation and Documentation
Designate utilities using geophysical equipment
Perform field surveys, document projects, and conduct vacuum excavation for utility exposure
Collect data and complete vault diagrams for 3D QL-B mapping
Project Management and Leadership
Lead 2D and 3D QL-B mapping projects with up to two crews
Oversee vacuum excavation and backfilling under complex conditions
Coordinate with clients, field crews, office staff, project managers, utility, owners, and service providers
Technical Proficiency
Operate geophysical and survey equipment for utility mapping
Use RTK GPR and total stations for accurate horizontal and vertical data collection
Collect vertical data for gravity flow systems using levels
Reporting and Documentation
- Prepare Structures Data Reports and analyze utility plans and records
Safety and Compliance
- Maintain required safety certifications and ensure adherence to safety standards

What You Bring to SAM
4–5 years of SUE field experience preferred
Experience as a “lead” on SUE QL-A & QL-B field crews required
Previous role as a project-level field supervisor on SUE QL-A & QL-B projects preferred
Surveying experience preferred
Military experience is a plus
