Job Description

The Sustainability Lead Steward Supervisor is responsible for executing, supervising, and continuously improving sustainability, waste-diversion, sanitation, and stewarding operations across the venue. This role leads stewarding and sustainability teams during events and daily operations to ensure proper waste sorting, recycling, composting, donation recovery, sanitation compliance, and inventory control in a high-volume, event-driven environment.

This is a hands-on supervisory role focused on execution, training, compliance, and accountability?including ownership of janitorial and stewarding inventory through month-end close ?rather than policy-only sustainability work.

Job Responsibilities

Sustainability & Zero-Waste Operations

  • Lead venue sustainability programs including recycling, composting, reuse, oil recovery, and food donation initiatives

  • Oversee waste sorting stations and post-event material recovery to maximize landfill diversion

  • Monitor waste streams during events and correct contamination issues in real time

  • Track and report diversion metrics, weight tickets, oil waste, and material flows in coordination with approved vendors

  • Maintain and organize back-of-house recycling, composting, and sustainability areas

  • Support venue or client sustainability goals (e.g., zero-waste events, municipal or client sustainability programs)

  • Assist with sustainability, recycling, and sanitation execution during on-site events

Stewarding & Team Leadership

  • Supervise stewarding and sustainability crews during events and non-event operating days

  • Assign staff to waste stations, back-of-house sorting areas, recycling centers, and post-event cleanups

  • Train stewards, leads, temp staff, and volunteers on:

  • Proper waste separation

  • Composting and recycling procedures

  • Sanitation, food safety, and HACCP standards

  • Conduct pre-event briefings and post-event debriefs focused on performance, safety, and improvement opportunities

  • Ensure staffing levels align with event size, layout, and service needs

  • Inspect stewarding equipment, carts, containers, and tools for cleanliness, readiness, and safe operation

Janitorial & Stewarding Inventory Ownership (Month-End Accountability)

  • Own stewardship and janitorial inventory control , including chemicals, cleaning supplies, liners, PPE, and related consumables

  • Maintain par levels for stewarding and sanitation supplies based on operational and event needs

  • Track inventory usage, losses, and replenishment throughout the month

  • Complete and reconcile month-end inventory counts and documentation in alignment with company and finance requirements

  • Coordinate ordering, receiving, storage, and rotation of janitorial and stewarding supplies

  • Ensure proper labeling, storage, and compliance with safety and sanitation standards for all chemicals and materials

Reporting, Documentation & Compliance

  • Accurately complete sustainability, sanitation, and inventory reports and logs

  • Maintain records required for venue, client, municipal, or internal sustainability programs

  • Document issues, corrective actions, and follow-ups related to waste, sanitation, or safety

  • Support internal audits, inspections, and operational reviews

  • Enforce company policies related to safety, sanitation, environmental compliance, and inventory control

Qualifications

  • 1?3 years of supervisory experience in stewarding, sanitation, sustainability, or event operations

  • Experience in large-scale venues, convention centers, or high-volume food & beverage operations strongly preferred

  • Working knowledge of:

  • Recycling, composting, and waste diversion

  • Sanitation and food safety standards

  • Experience with janitorial or stewarding inventory management preferred

  • Ability to lead teams in fast-paced, event-driven environments

  • Strong communication and on-the-floor problem-solving skills

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work indoors and outdoors as required

  • Comfortable working nights, weekends, and event-based schedules
