Position Description:

The Network Engineer I is an entry‑level role responsible for supporting the design, implementation, monitoring, and troubleshooting of the organization’s network infrastructure. This position works closely with senior network engineers to maintain reliable, secure, and high‑performing wired and wireless networks, while gaining hands‑on experience with enterprise networking technologies, tools, and operational processes.

Position Qualifications:

Formal Education & Certification

  • College diploma or university degree in the field of computer science or related degree in IT, and/or 2+ years equivalent work experience.

  • Certifications in ITIL preferred.

Knowledge & Experience

  • Architected and implemented scalable LAN, WAN, VPN, and wireless network solutions, configuring routers, switches, firewalls, and access points across a large, distributed environment.

  • Operated and maintained network infrastructure supporting construction sites, regional offices, and facilities across the U.S. and Pacific regions, ensuring high availability and consistent performance.

  • Administered network security controls, including firewalls, VPN connectivity, and IDS/IPS platforms; supported incident response and remediation activities to protect enterprise networks.

  • Leveraged enterprise monitoring and analytics platforms (Cisco Meraki, Catalyst Center, ThousandEyes) to analyze traffic patterns, identify performance risks, and resolve issues proactively.

  • Diagnosed and resolved advanced network issues such as DNS failures, VLAN configuration errors, wireless interference, packet loss, and bandwidth contention across geographically dispersed locations.

  • Applied in‑depth expertise in Cisco networking technologies, supporting both cloud‑managed and traditional on‑premise infrastructure environments.

  • Supported implementation of QoS policies and SD‑WAN capabilities to improve application performance and optimize bandwidth utilization in distributed field environments.

  • Assisted with cloud network integrations, supporting Azure networking configurations, governance standards, and secure connectivity between on‑premise and cloud environments.

  • Maintained accurate and current network documentation, including configurations, diagrams, change records, and performance reporting aligned with internal standards and compliance requirements.

  • Provided technical guidance to peers and contributed to cross‑functional initiatives focused on improving network operations, tooling, and automation within internal support teams.

Essential Duties:

Strategy & Planning

  • Collaborate with IT staff to create optimal network design topologies and configurations.

  • Assist in the development and implementation of policies for end-user devices such as desktop, laptop and mobile.

  • Respond to emergency network outages in accordance with business continuity and disaster recovery plans.

  • Prepare and ensure accuracy of documentation, procedures, manuals, and checklists for network installations, including data, voice, and video systems.

Procurement & Deployment

  • Support the development and implementation of networking projects and new technology initiatives.

  • Conduct research on network products, services, protocols, and standards in support of network procurement and development efforts. Evaluate and recommend for purchase networking hardware and software products.

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of networking contracts and supervise contract-based installations.

Operational Management

  • Install, configure, test, maintain, monitor, and troubleshoot end-user workstation hardware, software, networked peripheral devices, cabling, and networking hardware and software products.

  • Assist the Tier 1 Service Desk to work with end users in the escalation of IT issues in the IT ticketing system.

  • Maintain servers, security solutions, and all network and hardware equipment.

  • Monitor and test network performance and provide network performance statistics and reports.

  • Receive and respond to incoming calls, SMS, and/or e-mails regarding network connectivity problems.

  • Perform on-site analysis, diagnosis, and resolution of complex network problems for a variety of end users. Recommend and implement corrective hardware and/or software solutions, including off-site repair.

  • Maintain proper end-user configuration, IT hardware inventory, licensing, and PC/end user onboarding and offboarding of all IT equipment, including PC setup, troubleshooting, and security controls.

Physical Work Classification & Demands:

• Light Work. Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.

• The individual in this position will periodically walk, kneel, sit, crouch, reach, stoop, read/see, speak, push, pull, lift, stand, and finger/type. The frequency of each action varies by workflow and office activity.

• Walking - The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, boxes, cabinets, etc.

• Constantly operates a computer and other office machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, phone, and computer printer.

• The person in this position frequently communicates with employees and external stakeholders regarding a variety of topics related to office administration.

• Constantly computes, analyzes, and conceptualizes mathematical calculations and formulas.

• Constantly reads written communications and views email submissions.

• The person in this position regularly sits in a stationary position in front of a computer screen.

• Visual acuity and ability to operate a vehicle as certified and appropriate.

• Rarely exposed to high and low temperatures

• Rarely exposed to noisy environments and outdoor elements such as precipitation and wind.

It is also eligible for employee-paid enrollment in vision and dental insurance. Hensel Phelps also believes in the importance of taking time to recharge. As a result, salaried employees are eligible for paid time off beginning upon hire. Salaried positions (project engineers and above) participate in an annual bonus plan, subject to company and employee performance. Salaried employees (this is all salaried employees) are also eligible for a company cell phone or cell phone allowance in accordance with company policy. Further, salaried employees (project engineers and above) also receive either a vehicle or vehicle allowance in accordance with Hensel Phelps’ policies. Based on position location, a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) may also be included (subject to periodic review and adjustment).

Compensation Range (Colorado only):

$74,100 -$ 81,900 USD
