The Opportunity

This opportunitywith Black & Veatchoffers the chance to collaborate with multidisciplinary project teams within theGovernment & CommunitiesMarketSector, supportingWater & Industrial Water projectsandbuildingcritical infrastructure fortoday’sand tomorrow’s challenges.Civil professionals contribute to site development efforts,including grading and drainage, erosion control, roadways,fencing, and underground utilities.

The Virtual Design & Data Solutions (VDDS) Senior Civil Engineering Technician serves in a lead technical role supporting the development ofhigh qualitycivil engineering deliverables for complex infrastructureprojects. This position applies advanced civil engineering knowledge to the creation and modification of site development plans, grading designs, and utility layouts using industry standard tools such as Autodesk Civil 3D. The Senior Technicianprovidestechnical guidance, consultation, and training to technicians and engineering staff, ensuring consistency, quality, and adherence to design standards. Thisrole may coordinate and oversee assigned technicians, supporting both conceptual and detailed designactivities to deliver efficient,accurate, and mission aligned civil solutions.

In this role you will have the opportunity to:

  • Functions as a senior engineering technician, technical design specialist, and/or supervisor

  • Applies advanced technicalexpertiseto solve complex design challenges within a specific engineering discipline

  • Contributes to the development of innovative engineering solutions

  • Uses digital tools and design software (e.g., CAD, BIM, 3D modeling) with standardized proceduresto create,modify, andmaintaintechnical documentation, drawings, and project deliverables

  • Provides consultation, training, and oversight to other engineering techniciansto ensurequality, consistency, and compliance with project standards

Key Responsibilities

  • Establishes and communicatesappropriate designand graphic standards

  • Reviews project requirements todeterminecorrect formats and deliverable content

  • Promotes quality and consistency across projects, groups, and sections

  • Reviews design inputs to ensure alignment and consistency

  • Ensures deliverablescomply withapplicable codes and standards

  • May contribute to continuous improvement of design guides, standards, and processes

  • Mayparticipateand leadprocess improvement and change management activities

  • Manages drawing control andmaintainshistorical project records

  • Appliesengineering principles and established design practices to complex designs

  • Exercises sound judgment in interpreting inputs and making deliverable-related decisions

  • Handles complex technical assignments and provides guidance to other professionals

  • Performs design calculations, material quantity takeoffs, estimates, and documentation

  • May review deliverables produced by others for quality and accuracy

  • May coordinate presentations, production design, and use of electronic design tools

  • Maymonitorproduction to ensure consistency, budget, and schedule

  • May program control systems or support plant start-up activities within area of expertise

  • Coordinateswith other design groups to exchange information for design development

  • May support field activities asrequired

  • Communicatesprojectdesign requirements, progress, and schedules

  • Responsible forassistingwith identification of key client interests and drivers and maydeterminethe key clients in some instances.Communicate client interests and drivers to project team members and develop approaches to accommodate these concerns.Assistdiscipline or department management in developing and communicatingappropriate designstandards and process improvement activities

  • Identifiesand supports training and development needs for supervised personnel

  • Recognized forexpertisein one or more areas. May be assigned special assignments depending on technicalexpertise. Assignments may involve solving a particular design problem orparticipatingin a design team focused on completing an assigned project task

  • Makespresentations andconductstraining classes within a specialized area of expertise.

Preferred Qualifications

Associate Degree in Drafting or an Engineering Design Related Technology preferred. Bachelor Degree in an Engineering Design Related Technology (preferred).

Minimum Qualifications

Typically a minimum of 11 years related work experience. All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected) which may include any/all of the following: criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with any applicable laws and regulations.

Work Environment/Physical Demands

Hybrid or flexible work options may be offered after the first 90 days of employment based upon manager discretion, job performance and work assignments.
