Job Information
Oracle Architect, SCADA and Controls Engineering in Phoenix, Arizona
Job Description
Overview
Architect, SCADA and Controls Engineering leads the strategy, architecture, engineering standards, and delivery enablement for data center controls systems across a global portfolio. This role drives the design and development of Building Management Systems (BMS), Electrical Power Monitoring Systems (EPMS), Building Automation Systems (BAS), and SCADA platforms to ensure safe, reliable, scalable, and efficient operations for large, high-availability and AI-infrastructure data center programs.
This leader partners closely with Data Center Design/Build teams, Network and Security, Operations, Reliability Engineering, and key vendors to define repeatable reference architectures, govern designs through structured reviews, and ensure operational outcomes are achieved through design, commissioning and lifecycle support.
Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities:
Architecture, Reference Designs, and Technical Standards
• Define and own end-to-end reference architectures for BMS/EPMS/BAS/SCADA systems, including resilience models, redundancy patterns, segmentation, and enterprise-scale observability.
• Establish and maintain engineering standards and specifications (topology, protocols, naming/tagging conventions, alarming philosophy, historian requirements, time synchronization, retention, and failover).
• Own and evolve controls-related content in Architect Design Guidelines (ADGs), Basis of Design (BoD), templates, and design specifications to enable repeatable deployments across varied site types and delivery models (lease, build, retrofit).
• Drive standardization of approved components and platform patterns (PLCs/RTUs, gateways, SCADA platforms, historians, meters, sensors, network elements), including lifecycle plans (obsolescence, spares, patching windows).
• Define interoperability requirements and integration across controls, mechanical/electrical systems, telemetry pipelines, and enterprise analytics platforms.
• Champion a scalable architecture that enables multi-site visibility, benchmarking, performance optimization, and predictive analytics across the global data center portfolio.
Deep Technical Leadership & Design Governance
• Serve as the senior technical escalation point for complex controls/SCADA issues spanning mechanical, electrical, controls, OT networking, cybersecurity, and operations.
• Provide architectural guidance for project designs to ensure constructability, modularity, speed-to-market, and operational rigor without compromising safety or reliability.
• Lead structured milestone design reviews, compliance validation, and exception/waiver adjudication; ensure risks are documented, assessed, and closed with durable engineering decisions.
• Mentor and technically guide senior engineers and partner resources; raise overall engineering bar through patterns, exemplars, and design playbooks.
Reliability, Commissioning, and Operational Outcomes
• Define functional testing standards, commissioning requirements, and acceptance criteria for controls/SCADA, including integrated systems testing.
• Drive vendor accountability to ensure BAS and EPMS deliverables include full point lists, metadata standards, open protocol access, and validation of enterprise integration during commissioning.
• Architect alarming/event management strategies that reduce alert fatigue and improve operational signal quality at fleet scale.
• Drive reliability programs including redundancy validation, FMEA, incident postmortems, root cause analysis support, and continuous improvement actions specific to control systems.
• Ensure usability, maintainability, and training readiness are built into designs (operator workflows, diagnostics, runbooks, and change management).
Cybersecurity, Network Architecture, and Compliance
• Ensure controls/SCADA designs meet enterprise security and compliance expectations (zone/segmentation models, identity and access control, audit logging, secure remote access, and monitoring).
• Partner with network and security engineering to define approved OT architectures, protocol enablement patterns, time sync, and resilient connectivity models.
• Establish configuration management, documentation, and change control practices that support auditability and operational rigor across a global fleet.
Vendor, Integrator, and Cross-Functional Influence
• Act as technical authority with key vendors/integrators—driving architecture alignment, deliverable quality, and conformance to OCI standards.
• Influence stakeholders and executive leadership on controls-related technical direction, investment decisions, and risk tradeoffs.
• Support sourcing activities and contract language development for controls scopes (standards adherence, cybersecurity clauses, commissioning deliverables, SLAs, documentation requirements).
Required Qualifications
• 12+ years in mission-critical/data center engineering or OT systems, with deep expertise in controls/BMS/EPMS/SCADA architectures at scale.
• Demonstrated success designing and standardizing controls and SCADA systems across multiple sites (new builds, retrofits, and live operational campuses).
• Expert knowledge of:
BMS/BAS architectures, EPMS monitoring, SCADA/historian patterns, and redundant system design
Alarming/event management philosophies and controls commissioning methodologies
OT networking fundamentals (segmentation, resiliency, time sync) and secure remote access concepts
• Proven experience creating tag standardization frameworks and naming conventions enabling consistent operations and portfolio-level analytics.
• Familiarity with industrial protocols commonly used in mission-critical environments (e.g., MQTT, OPC UA, BACnet/IP, Modbus TCP).
• Strong ability to communicate complex technical decisions clearly to engineering, operations, and executive audiences; produce high-quality standards and design artifacts.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience supporting AI/HPC infrastructure, including high-density thermal/electrical monitoring and advanced telemetry requirements.
• Familiarity integrating controls data with enterprise telemetry pipelines and observability platforms (e.g., via OPC UA/MQTT, API-based extraction, or historian replication).
• Deep expertise with Ignition SCADA (Inductive Automation), including enterprise architecture, gateway network design, tag strategy, historian architecture, security hardening, and large-scale multi-site deployments.
• Proven experience aggregating and normalizing telemetry across distributed sites (BMS, EPMS, PLCs, RTUs, meters, environmental monitoring) into centralized operational dashboards and data platforms.
• Understanding sustainability/efficiency metrics and how controls strategies support energy and water optimization. • BS in Electrical/Mechanical/Controls Engineering or related field; advanced degree a plus.
