Job Title: Systems Administrator
Job Description
As a Systems Administrator, you will be responsible for ensuring the availability and integrity of both physical and virtual infrastructure for Machinery Control Systems at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Philadelphia Division. Success in this role requires significant experience with virtualized environments and technologies.
Responsibilities
Provide administrative support and ensure operating systems are fully patched and updated.
Become a subject matter expert to support the VDI and any MCS development activities.
Provide engineering support for virtual and physical enterprise servers and sustain the VDI.
Monitor system performance, configuration, maintenance, and repair of physical/virtual server and storage systems.
Maintain records of system downtime and equipment inventory.
Apply revisions to host system firmware and software.
Collaborate with vendors to assist in support activities.
Develop new system and application implementation plans, custom scripts, and testing procedures to ensure operational reliability.
Perform troubleshooting as required, leading problem-solving efforts involving outside vendors and other support personnel.
Install, modify, and maintain systems and utility software on server computer systems.
Ensure high availability and acceptable performance levels of critical computer resources.
Develop procedures, programs, and documentation for backup and restoration of host operating systems and host-based applications.
Coordinate project directions and schedules to maximize benefits and minimize impacts on programmatic activity.
Develop tools and procedures for program team members.
Develop test procedures to validate upgrades and ensure existing functionality remains intact.
Assist with peer reviews to support software and hardware development.
Develop and implement security policies, procedures, and best practices to protect digital assets.
Conduct regular security audits and vulnerability assessments to identify and mitigate potential risks.
Manage firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and other security tools to safeguard network integrity.
Monitor network traffic for suspicious activities and respond to security incidents.
Educate and train employees on new software/hardware and security best practices and awareness.
Essential Skills
Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field (or equivalent work experience).
Proven experience as a Systems Administrator with a focus on cybersecurity.
Certification in cybersecurity (e.g., CompTIA Security+, CISSP).
Strong knowledge of network and system administration, including Windows and Linux environments.
Experience managing server virtualization technologies like VMware vSphere or VMware Horizon.
Experience with deploying and troubleshooting virtual desktop environments, including VDI (Virtual Desktop Interface).
Experience with network virtualization and security platforms such as NSX.
Experience with virtual cloud network design and sustainment.
Experience with developing system diagrams and design documents.
Ability to develop test plans/procedures.
Ability to assess how new patches or updates affect the overall system.
Ability to build and troubleshoot computers and servers, and to install software and troubleshoot issues.
LAN Routing and Switching design, configuration, and troubleshooting experience (VLANs, STP, 802.1Q trunks).
Solid understanding of LAN/WAN networking and Brocade technology.
Group Policy design and configuration experience.
Active Directory/LDAP user and group administration experience.
Familiarity with firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems, and anti-virus software.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience with Atlassian products like Jira and Confluence preferred.
Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
Effective communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
Work Environment
This position is 100% onsite at the Philadelphia Navy Yard.
Job Type & Location
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Philadelphia, PA.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $32.00 - $53.00/hr.
