Actalent Software Engineer in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Job Title: Software EngineerJob Description

We are seeking a Software Engineer to support the Machinery Control Systems (MCS) branch for U.S. Navy LHA and LHD class ships. This role involves working with mission-critical software used to monitor and control shipboard machinery and systems. The software is custom, non-commercial, and highly specialized, and engineers will receive training upon joining. This is an excellent opportunity for early-career to mid-level engineers seeking long-term stability, exposure to defense programs, and hands-on work with real operational systems.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, modify, and maintain machinery control software for Navy shipboard systems.

  • Perform bug fixes, enhancements, and system updates using Jira and Confluence.

  • Support integration of software with shipboard hardware and I/O points such as sensors, valves, and controllers.

  • Work with programmable control systems in VME/PLC-type environments.

  • Participate in software testing, validation, and troubleshooting.

  • Support occasional shipboard testing and installations.

  • Collaborate with Navy engineers, technical leads, and program managers.

  • Ensure cybersecurity considerations are incorporated into software development.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.

  • 2–5 years of professional software development experience.

  • Proficiency in C# or willingness to learn.

  • Ability to obtain an Interim DoD Secret Clearance.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and a willingness to learn proprietary systems.

  • Comfortable working in a secure, regulated environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Familiarity with C++ (rare but valuable).

  • Experience with Windows and/or Linux environments.

  • Understanding of networking concepts.

  • Experience with PLC-style systems or industrial controls.

  • Proficiency in MATLAB or scripting languages.

  • CompTIA Security+ certification or willingness to obtain.

  • Exposure to shipboard, industrial, or defense systems.

Work Environment

The position offers a stable work environment with opportunities for exposure to defense programs. The role requires occasional shipboard testing and installations, and collaboration with Navy engineers and program managers is essential. The work is conducted in a secure, regulated environment, ensuring cybersecurity considerations are a priority.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Philadelphia, PA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $38.00 - $46.00/hr.
