JOB OVERVIEW:

The Medical Assistant performs a wide variety of duties and responsibilities, emphasizing quality of care and customer service. The MA collaborates with all clinical services staff to support direct patient care, demonstrating flexibility and a positive attitude. Patients are the key priority in this position, requiring the MA to serve as a point of contact in an environment that promotes patient comfort and trust. The position must exemplify the core values and mission of the organization, exercising discretion, diplomacy, and tact in patient/staff interactions. The MA communicates immediate concerns regarding patient interaction to the Lead MA. The MA reports to the Practice Manager.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Triage patients, including blood pressure, weight, height, pulse, and temperature.
  2. Administer injections, immunizations, and venipuncture according to orders in the EHR for adults and children.
  3. Collection of lab specimens.
  4. EKG if needed.
  5. Responsible for reporting to other sites as needed.
  6. Responsible for all front desk functions in a primary care setting.
  7. Schedule appointments.
  8. Schedule specialty and ancillary appointments.
  9. Answer phones.
  10. Responsible for patient registration data entry.
  11. Verify insurance.
  12. Daily batching of encounter forms.
  13. Follow up for reports from specialists.
  14. Assist providers and clinical staff as needed.
  15. Assist patients as needed.
  16. Review patients' charts and encounter forms for completion.
  17. Scan reports to the EHR and distribute.
  18. Ensure that prescription refill and voicemails are retrieved daily.
  19. Extensive medical terminology.
  20. Report Incidents as they occur.
  21. Complete assigned training as required.
  22. Utilize CPR skills if necessary.
  23. Translate using Spanish (if bilingual).
  24. Other duties as assigned.

PHMC COMPLIANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Understands and adheres to PHMC compliance standards as they appear in the PHMC Code of Conduct, Whistleblower, and Conflict of Interest policies.
  2. Keeps abreast of all pertinent federal, state, and PHMC regulations, laws, and policies as they presently exist and as they change or are modified.
  3. Complies with HIPAA and Confidentiality Policies and Procedures as they apply to the job.
  4. Complies with Department of Public Health (DPH), Joint Commission, and other accreditation and regulatory agencies' standards.
  5. Adheres to all PHMC policies and procedures.
  6. Knowledge and adherence to Infection Control and Environment of Care guidelines and procedures as described in the annual education module.
  7. Maintains MDS sheets according to federal and state regulatory agencies.
  8. Keeps all required certifications current.
  9. Completes all continuing education requirements according to PHMC University.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Certifications

  1. High school diploma or GED required.
  2. A diploma from an accredited Medical Assistant program is required.
  3. Medical Assistant certification required.
  4. CPR certification required.

Experience

  1. 1-2 years of experience in a clinical laboratory/medical office environment required.

Skills

  1. Phlebotomy and lab skills.
  2. Knowledge of billing procedures and insurance verification.
  3. Data entry.
  4. Familiar with Managed Care Plans and referral process.
  5. Knowledge of ICD 9/10 codes.
  6. Extensive medical terminology.
  7. Extensive organizational skills.
  8. Must have a pleasant manner.
  9. Ability to assist clinical staff hen required.
  10. Ability to manage and complete work assigned.
  11. Must be flexible.
