*SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: *Must have at least 3 months of verifiable experience in all job duties. This job requires exposure to extreme temperatures, ability to lift 60 lbs., repetitive movements, extensive walking, frequent stooping, extensive pushing and pulling.
*JOB DUTIES: *Handling manual tasks associated with commodity production and harvest activities. Crops/Commodities: corn, fall squash, flowers, tomatoes, potatoes, green peppers, green beans, cucumbers, melons, cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli and evergreen (Christmas) trees. Primary duties (performed the majority of workdays): Christmas trees: Workers will perform heavy manual field work including but not limited to planting, cultivating and harvesting on a tree farm, and cutting and piling firewood. Removes brush, ferns and other growth from planting area using mattocks and brush hooks. Plants seedlings using mattock or dibble. May scatter fertilizer pellets over planted area by hand or spreader. May spray herbicides or pesticides. Shears tops and limb tips from trees as specified by supervisor to control growth, increase limb density and improve shape. Selects trees for cutting according to markings or size, species and grade and fells trees using axe or chain saw. May make wreaths and roping from cut greenery produced on the farm. Drags cut trees from cutting area, runs trees through tree baler and loads trees onto trucks for transport. Work will also include heavy mechanized field work using power equipment. By way of example and not limitation power equipment may include power shears and chain saws. Workers may be required to do any other manual tasks involved in the production or harvesting of evergreen trees and the maintenance of tree nurseries, fields and other production areas. Produce: Workers will transplant produce plants, cultivate and weed as needed. Workers will pick produce as it ripens. Considerable stooping and kneeling is required. Care must be taken to prevent damaging produce and plants. Workers will lay plastic and drip tape, remove plastic from fields, cultivate and weed as needed. Workers will trellis and prune plants. Work is to be done in the field for long periods of time. Workers are expected to perform duties including boxing, weighing and loading of product. This is considered heavy manual labor; to perform the job adequately workers must be able to lift trees and boxed produce weighing up to 60 pounds over the course of a normal work day. Workers should be able to work on their feet in bent positions for long periods of time. Work requires repetitive movements and extensive walking. Allergies to ragweed, goldenrod, insect spray, related chemicals, etc. may affect workers' ability to perform the job. Workers are exposed to wet weather early in the morning through the heat of the day, working in fields. Temperatures may range from 10 to 100 F. Workers may be required to work during occasional showers not severe enough to stop field operations. Work is performed as a member of a crew under close supervision of a field supervisor.
