The Survey Technician supports design engineers and survey crews by preparing detailed plans, processing field data, and assisting with land development and utility design projects from concept through completion. This role combines office-based drafting and research with field-based construction observation and surveying, offering exposure to a diverse portfolio of residential and commercial projects and opportunities for professional growth.
Responsibilities
Assist design engineers with the preparation of clear, accurate, and detailed plans, using AutoCAD and preferably Civil 3D.
Prepare precise construction layout points for survey crews to support field operations.
Perform construction observation services in the field to verify that work aligns with plans and specifications.
Manage small land development and utility design projects from start to finish, ensuring timely and accurate completion.
Conduct preliminary research in the office and at courthouses to gather deeds, plats, and other records needed to support survey projects.
Collect, organize, and process survey data required for project completion, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
Participate on survey crews for a variety of survey types, contributing to field measurements and data collection (party chief experience is a plus).
Prepare clear, organized field notes that accurately document survey activities and findings.
Produce as-built plans that meet client and municipal requirements, reflecting final constructed conditions.
Maintain survey vehicles and equipment in good working order, ensuring readiness for field assignments.
Serve as a field liaison between clients and project managers, communicating project needs, progress, and issues observed in the field.
Essential Skills
5–10 years of experience in a survey or civil technician role.
Strong AutoCAD skills, with the ability to prepare detailed survey and civil plans.
Experience with Civil 3D or AutoCAD in a professional setting.
Field data processing experience, including collection, organization, and verification of survey data.
Experience with construction layout drafting to support survey and construction activities.
Knowledge of surveying practices and procedures for a variety of survey types.
Ability to prepare clear, organized field notes and as-built plans that meet client and municipal standards.
Capability to perform construction observation services in the field.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy in both field and office work.
Effective communication skills to serve as a liaison between clients and project managers.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Party chief experience or the ability to lead survey crews is a plus.
Experience managing small land development and utility design projects from inception through completion.
Familiarity with courthouse and office-based research for deeds, plats, and other survey-related records.
Interest in professional advancement and willingness to grow into expanded responsibilities.
Ability to work on a diverse portfolio of residential and commercial projects.
Willingness to work overtime when needed, with potential eligibility for profit sharing once in a direct role.
Work Environment
The position offers a balanced work environment with approximately 50% office work and 50% field work. Office duties focus on AutoCAD and Civil 3D drafting, data processing, research, and plan preparation, while field duties include construction observation, data collection, and participation on survey crews. The role supports a steady flow of projects, providing consistent work, exposure to a wide range of residential and commercial developments, and opportunities for overtime. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Peoria, IL.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $37.00/hr.
