DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As an Equipment Operator with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, you hold a crucial position in maintaining the safety and functionality of our roadways, particularly during the demanding winter season when effective snow removal is critical. Your responsibilities extend beyond just snow plowing; you are also actively involved in various construction projects, where your expertise plays a significant role in enhancing the infrastructure and ensuring the safety of all road users. Each day presents physically challenging tasks that require a strong commitment to teamwork and a dedication to excellence.

In this role, you will operate heavy machinery while also performing minor repairs and routine maintenance on your equipment and vehicles, ensuring they remain in optimal working condition. Keeping meticulous records through daily logs and reports is essential for monitoring equipment usage and maintenance history, which in turn fosters operational efficiency and accountability within the team. At the conclusion of each day, you can take pride in the knowledge that your efforts greatly contribute to road safety and improve the quality of life for countless residents, making your position as an Equipment Operator both rewarding and impactful.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment

  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.

  • Work hours subject to change based on seasonal requirements and operational needs.

  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.

  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $44,988.00 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Successful completion of the Transportation Equipment Operator Trainee Program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration);or

  • Graduation from a Commercial Driver's License Training School;or

  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

    Special Requirements:

  • Must possess an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver's License or equivalent with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed.

  • Must possess an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations.

  • Must obtain an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders, and two additional pieces of construction equipment, within the probationary period.

  • Employees will be required to obtain and maintain CDL endorsements and certifications necessary to operate specific pieces of equipment.

  • This position requires operation of vehicles or equipment with a manual transmission.

    Additional Requirements:

  • This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
