THE POSITION

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), in partnership with the Mercer County Maintenance Organization, is seeking a dedicated individual to join our team as a full-time CDL Equipment Operator Trainee. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As an Equipment Operator Trainee with PennDOT, you will play an essential role in keeping Pennsylvania’s roadways safe, reliable, and well-maintained. From supporting winter operations to assisting with construction and maintenance projects, your work will directly impact the traveling public and the communities we serve. This position offers hands-on experience, teamwork, and the satisfaction of knowing your efforts make a meaningful difference every day.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting winter operationsby operating snowplows and other equipment to ensure safe travel during severe weather.

  • Assisting with construction and maintenance projectsthat improve roadway and bridge infrastructure throughout the county.

  • Performing physical laboras needed to support daily operations and contribute to a productive, team-focused work environment.

  • Operating heavy equipment and trucksunder guidance while developing the skills needed for full-time operator duties.

  • Completing minor repairs and routine preventative maintenanceon assigned equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation.

  • Maintaining accurate daily logs and reportsto track equipment usage, maintenance activities, and operational needs.

    Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment

  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.

  • Dual shifts, overtime, and travel may be required.

  • Work schedule is subject to change due to weather or seasonal requirements.

  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.

  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Special Requirements:

  • This position requires possession of a valid Pennsylvania non-commercial Class C Driver’s License or equivalent.

  • This position requires possession of a valid Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver Learner’s Permit on the first day of work.

  • This position requires possession of a valid Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations on the first day of work.

  • This position requires the ability to demonstrate successful operation of equipment with a manual transmission.

    Additional Requirements:

  • This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

  • You must pass a background investigation.
