The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is seeking a skilled Drill Operator to join our team for the 2026 Summer Employment Program. In this role, you will operate specialized drill-rig equipment and perform a variety of manual labor tasks as part of a dedicated drill crew. DESCRIPTION OF WORK
In this position, you will operate a variety of equipment—including trucks, drill rigs, water trucks, and electric drills—while ensuring safe operation and minimizing equipment wear through proper field adjustments, minor repairs, and preventive maintenance. You will also demonstrate equipment operation to coworkers and assist mechanics with minor repair tasks as needed.
Your responsibilities include maintaining accurate equipment records, performing manual labor during drilling operations, and securing access to drill sites. You will be expected to select and use the appropriate tools for each task and promptly report any missing or damaged equipment.
Additionally, you will help guide operators of rental equipment and support technical field activities such as identifying soil and rock types, conducting tests, labeling samples, and installing and monitoring slope-indicator casings.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
Seasonal full-time employment.
Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch. Work hours will vary based on position.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
Two years of experience in the operation of core and auger boring equipment; or
An equivalent combination of experience and training.
Special Requirements:
All positions require, at time of hire, an active Pennsylvania Class A Commercial Driver’s License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed or equivalent.
All positions require, at time of hire, possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations.
All candidates must demonstrate, at time of interview, successful operation of equipment with a manual transmission.
All employees must obtain an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) during the probationary period and continuously maintain it while employed in this job.
