Overview:

The Utility Material Handling Supervisor oversees daily warehouse and yard operations within the utility material management environment. This role provides leadership to laborers and material handlers, ensuring safe, efficient, and accurate handling of utility materials in both WHSE and outdoor yard settings. The Supervisor is responsible for coordinating workflows, maintaining inventory integrity, supporting field operations, and upholding safety and compliance standards. This position requires strong organizational skills, hands‑on leadership, and the ability to manage teams in fast‑paced, physically demanding environments.

Responsibilities:

  • Supervise daily activities of material handlers, laborers, and yard personnel, ensuring tasks are completed safely, accurately, and on schedule.

  • Assign work, monitor productivity, and provide real‑time coaching to maintain high operational standards.

  • Lead daily safety briefings, tailboards, and job hazard analyses (JHAs), reinforcing a culture of safety and compliance.

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for drivers, contractors, and field crews regarding material availability, staging, and release schedules.

  • Coordinate with management to plan labor needs, prioritize workloads, and support project timelines.

  • Oversee receiving, inspection, and reconciliation of inbound utility materials, ensuring accuracy against purchase orders and bills of lading.

  • Ensure proper storage, organization, and labeling of utility hardware, conductor, poles, transformers, UG materials, fittings, and assemblies.

  • Monitor and validate cycle counts, bin audits, and inventory adjustments within the Warehouse Management System.

  • Ensure accurate electronic tracking using handheld scanners, tablets, and mobile devices.

  • Review and approve material kits, job packets, and staging layouts before release to construction crews.

  • Ensure safe operation of forklifts, pallet jacks, telehandlers, and other material‑handling equipment; verify team certifications and training.

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and compliant warehouse and yard environment, including housekeeping, pallet disposal, and equipment staging.

  • Enforce OSHA, utility, and company safety guidelines, reporting hazards, incidents, and near misses promptly.

  • Work closely with field operations, logistics teams, and installation contractors to meet material delivery and project requirements.

  • Communicate daily expectations, operational updates, and performance feedback to team members.

  • Support emergency response or storm events, including after‑hours callouts for critical material handling or dispatch.

Required Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in warehouse, utility yard, construction materials, or logistics operations.

  • Demonstrated leadership experience, preferably in a supervisory or lead role.

  • Forklift certification; telehandler or heavy‑equipment experience preferred.

  • Ability to read and interpret packing lists, pick sheets, blueprints, and safety documentation.

  • Strong attention to detail, documentation accuracy, and organizational skills.

  • Physical ability to lift 50–75 lbs, work outdoors, and operate in varying weather conditions.

  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to lead diverse teams effectively.

  • Valid driver’s license; CDL is a plus.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with Warehouse Management Systems and electronic inventory tracking tools.

  • Knowledge of utility‑specific materials, standards, and construction workflows.

  • Ability to train and mentor team members on equipment operation, safety procedures, and material handling processes.

  • Strong problem‑solving skills and the ability to adapt to changing priorities.
