Job Title: Industrial Electrician – Underground Mining (2nd Shift)

Job Description

This role supports a 2nd shift maintenance team in an underground mining operation, focusing on maintaining and troubleshooting 3-phase 480V electrical systems and equipment. You will work with mining machinery, hoist systems, and motor controls, using electrical schematics and a CMMS to diagnose issues, perform repairs, and complete preventive maintenance. The position operates in a union environment and requires strong technical skills, safety awareness, and comfort working underground in a heavy industrial setting.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair electrical components on mining equipment, including conveyors, loaders, hoists, mine power feeders, PLCs, crushers, motor control centers, ground-fault monitors, and variable speed drives, primarily at 3-phase 480V.

  • Use a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) to plan, track, and document maintenance activities, repairs, and parts usage.

  • Read and interpret electrical schematics and calculations to diagnose electrical issues and determine effective repair strategies.

  • Troubleshoot 3-phase 480V systems by tracing power with multimeters, identifying faults, and wiring or re-wiring circuits as needed.

  • Support mechanical repairs and perform preventive maintenance on stationary equipment, including greasing, cleaning, and inspecting machinery.

  • Operate manual and automatic service hoist systems safely and in accordance with established procedures.

  • Maintain and repair older underground equipment, providing reactive troubleshooting during breakdowns to minimize downtime.

  • Apply and follow Lockout/Tagout procedures and electrical safety practices, maintaining constant awareness of energized cables, moving machinery, ground conditions, and other hazards.

  • Work safely in underground and surface mine environments, maintaining situational awareness of roof and rib conditions and other mining-related risks.

  • Perform physically demanding tasks such as prolonged standing, long-distance walking, climbing ladders, lifting materials, and operating equipment for extended periods.

  • Communicate effectively with maintenance, operations, and supervisory personnel to coordinate work, report issues, and support safe and efficient production.

Essential Skills

  • At least 3 years of industrial electrical troubleshooting experience, which may include experience as a multi-craft maintenance technician.

  • Proven experience with 3-phase 480V electrical installations, testing, and troubleshooting in an industrial environment.

  • Strong wiring and circuitry experience, including the ability to wire, re-wire, and terminate circuits safely and accurately.

  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and perform related electrical calculations.

  • Hands-on experience troubleshooting 3-phase 480V systems using multimeters and other electrical test equipment.

  • Experience using a CMMS (computerized maintenance management system) to locate information, plan work, and document maintenance activities.

  • Solid understanding of electrical safety practices, including Lockout/Tagout procedures and working around energized equipment.

  • Capability to work safely in heavy industrial environments and remain aware of moving machinery, power cables, and changing ground conditions.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • PLC troubleshooting experience and familiarity with ladder logic programming concepts.

  • MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration) certification or experience working under MSHA regulations.

  • Previous experience with mining equipment and underground mining operations.

  • Experience troubleshooting higher voltages above 480V, such as 4160V systems.

  • Familiarity with manual and automatic service hoist system operations.

  • In heavy industrial environments such as steel mills, quarries, foundries, or similar facilities.

Why Work Here?

This opportunity offers the stability of a long-established mining operation where the product is essential and demand remains steady. You work in a union-protected environment with clear job boundaries, seniority rules, and a defined overtime structure, supported by a strong relationship with the local union. Safety is deeply embedded in daily operations under MSHA regulations, ensuring that procedures, training, and equipment are designed with worker protection in mind. Skilled trades professionals can build a long-term career on mission-critical infrastructure, knowing the operation has been running for generations and is committed to continued investment and safe, reliable production.

Work Environment

This role is based in an underground salt mine, with work performed both underground and at surface facilities. Employees work hundreds of feet below ground in large excavated salt rooms created by drill-and-blast mining methods. The underground environment is open with high ceilings but can be dark in some areas, relying on cap lamps and equipment lighting for visibility. Conditions include variable temperatures and humidity, outdoor weather exposure at the surface, noise, and dust. Work areas are generally dry, but ground conditions can be uneven, slick, or changing, including floor heave and polished surfaces from mobile equipment traffic. You will work around moving machinery and energized power cables, requiring constant attention to roof and rib conditions and other mining hazards. The role involves significant physical activity, including prolonged standing, long-distance walking, extended seated equipment operation with whole-body vibration, working at heights with a full-body harness, shoveling and cleaning spillage, lifting materials up to 65 pounds, and climbing ladders of 30 feet or more. The environment is inherently dirty and heavy industrial in nature, and it is best suited to individuals comfortable in steel mill, quarry, foundry, or similar settings. The position follows a 2nd shift schedule from 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., with frequent Saturday work for overtime.
