TAI Senior Controls Designer in Owings Mills, Maryland

About the Role:

As a Senior Controls Designer at TAI, you will be the primary architect of complex electrical and controls design documents, transforming conceptual scopes into precise, high-performance engineering solutions. Your role is at the heart of our Systems Integration group, where you will independently manage project lifecycles; from researching industry standards and designing intricate PLC control panels to coordinating multi-discipline design efforts and performing critical field surveys. This is a highly collaborative position that empowers you to bridge the gap between preliminary engineering and final construction, ensuring every instrument location, network architecture, and power circuit meets the rigorous demands of industrial, pharmaceutical, and energy facilities.

Here’s a glimpse into your day to day:

  • Individuals in this position are responsible for planning, organizing, and performing detailed electrical and controls design documents.

  • This position receives general administrative direction from the division manager and senior engineers and is responsible for electrical and controls design of a few projects of varying complexity.

  • Research applicable industry standards, analysis of systems, preliminary and detailed engineering designs.

  • Develop engineering specifications for some items as well as project cost estimates.

  • Alert managers to change of scope and additional services.

  • Coordinate some aspects of project document completion.

  • Possess ability to interpret applicable codes.

  • Coordinate project design with other engineering disciplines.

You’ll be a perfect fit if you have:

  • Minimum eight (8) years of applicable design experience.

  • Proficient designing in AutoCAD; REVIT is a plus.

  • Experience in specifying and designing automation control systems for industrial, power, oil & gas, manufacturing, pharmaceutical, food & beverage facilities with significant expertise in at least one of the core industries served by TAI

  • Proficient with independently finding and review instruments (Level, Flow Pressure, Analytical, etc) electrical drawings to design power and control circuits and document it on electrical construction drawings.

  • Proficient with independently specifying Electrical Component and Field Devices (combination starters, VFD’s, MCC’s, pushbuttons/selector switches, etc.)

  • Proficient with independently designing and reviewing Electrical Construction Drawing sets including but not limited to instrument location plan, conduit block and network architecture drawings

  • Proficient with independently reviewing Electrical Construction Drawing sets including but not limited to single lines, grounding plans, lighting plans, instrument and power location plans, conduit block and network architecture drawings to ensure project consistency.

  • Proficient with independently designing and reviewing PLC control panel and motor control panel drawings

  • Working knowledge of the hardware requirements of Copper and Fiber Ethernet, RS-232&485, Profibus and other industrial communication protocols

  • Experience in specifying electrical control components for use in hazardous area locations per NFPA 70

  • Working knowledge and experience of designing electrical controls using at least one of the major PLC or DCS manufactures. (Allen Bradley/ Rockwell, Siemens, GE, Schnieder Electric, GE/Emerson, Delta-V/ Emerson)

  • Has a strong working knowledge of ISA standards and ability to interpret and contribute to development of P&ID

  • Familiar with the design of robust safety circuits and specify components of varying industry requirements

  • Working knowledge of NFPA 79 & UL508A

  • Has a strong knowledge of IEC and NEMA Electrical Schematic Standards.

  • Strong working knowledge of NEC (NFPA 70) for Motor and Control Circuits.

  • Effectively manage multiple ongoing project and tasks.

  • Assure compliance with company and client CAD standards.

  • Capable of performing field surveys in order to document existing conditions.

  • Microsoft Office applications – Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Project

Preferred Skills:

  • Familiarity with safety circuits

  • Familiarity with IO-Link Circuits

  • Familiarity with Intrinsically Safe Circuits

  • Working knowledge of NFPA 79

  • Revit is a plus

  • Autodesk Cloud (ACC) is a plus

  • BlueBeam Revu is a plus

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Pay: $40-55 hourly (depending on experience)
