Steele County Engineering Technician I, II or III in Owatonna, Minnesota

Job Duties

Under the direction of the County Engineer, the Engineering Technician is responsible for performing technical office and construction site duties associated with the delivery of the construction projects and overall operations of the department. Duties include, but are not limited to:

• Monitors and conducts inspections of construction projects to assure contractor complies with project specifications and plans; maintains records of construction activities.

• Performs construction project design using AutoCAD drafting and design software.

• Computes construction project quantities for estimating costs of construction projects.

• Performs construction material testing and computations on a project site.

• Performs construction surveying and project staking.

Minimum Education Required

• High School Diploma or GED

o Two-year degree in engineering technology, civil engineering, drafting, construction maintenance or related field preferred

• Experience in computer drafting with AutoCAD Civil 3D preferred; or ability to obtain through County provided training

Minimum Experience Required

• Minnesota Department of Transportation technical certifications including: Bituminous Street, Bridge Construction, and Concrete Field 1; or ability to obtain within one year through County provided training

• Demonstrated aptitude in math, science, construction, or maintenance desired.

• Valid driver’s license

• Ability to pass a standard background check

*Steele County will contribute to HSA/VEBA $1,700 for single or $3,500 for family (if you elect to pay for our Medical insurance that is provided by Medica); other benefits that are available include dental, vision, life insurance, long term disability insurance, deferred compensation plan, pension plan through PERA, Minnesota Paid Leave, employee assistance program, paid time off, etc. Cost of living adjustment (COLA) and pay increases per union contract. Union contract says there will be a COLA of 4% in 2027 and 3% in 2028.
