Senior Design Engineer
Job Description
The Senior Design Engineer designs functional, reliable, and cost-effective heavy-duty vehicle components and systems. This role performs engineering analysis, designs or re-designs components, and develops them for integration into existing and new vehicles. The engineer supports vehicle and component design execution, ensuring that solutions meet performance, safety, reliability, and cost objectives while adhering to established engineering standards and processes.
Responsibilities
Perform engineering calculations, investigations, and assigned tasks in accordance with internal standards and general industry engineering practices.
Support Senior engineers in preparing plans, detailed designs, computation methods, and technical reports.
Take responsibility for projects or portions of projects of limited to moderate complexity, and potentially manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Collaborate with other engineering disciplines and business support teams, as well as external suppliers, to ensure cohesive and effective design solutions.
Provide guidance and mentorship to entry-level engineers, designers, and technicians working on shared projects.
Maintain effective communication with suppliers, internal stakeholders, external customers, and other resources regarding technical issues and project status.
Ensure proper use of engineering criteria, CAD and drawing standards, and confirm that all technical activities comply with company policies and procedures.
Evaluate component and system designs for performance, safety, durability, and reliability in heavy-duty vehicle applications.
Direct and perform the preparation of layouts, detailed drawings, specifications, and bills of material for vehicle components and systems.
Conduct engineering analysis to support the selection of parts, components, and materials that meet design and performance requirements.
Provide technical assistance and troubleshooting support to production teams to resolve manufacturing or assembly issues.
Analyze and resolve engineering issues reported through verbal or written communication, and document findings and resolutions.
Prepare technical proposals, cost and schedule quotations, engineering reports, and presentations for internal and external audiences.
Create, organize, and maintain comprehensive project documentation for analysis, research, traceability, and historical records.
Use analytical and mathematical methods, including modeling and simulation where appropriate, to calculate system performance and optimize designs.
Communicate the status of engineering issues and resolutions clearly and promptly through verbal and written updates.
Essential Skills
Accredited bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering.
At least 3 years of related engineering experience.
Demonstrated experience with heavy-duty vehicle, automotive, or related equipment systems and components.
Proficiency with a high-level CAD system, with strong 3D modeling and drafting skills.
Hands-on experience in component design for mechanical and/or electrical systems.
Ability to perform engineering calculations, analyses, and investigations to support design decisions.
Strong understanding of mechanical principles as applied to automotive or heavy-vehicle equipment.
Experience evaluating designs for performance, safety, and reliability.
Ability to prepare layouts, drawings, specifications, and bills of material accurately and efficiently.
Strong verbal and written communication skills for interaction with suppliers, internal teams, and customers.
Ability to analyze and resolve engineering issues and provide clear, documented resolutions.
Capability to manage portions of projects or multiple projects with limited complexity.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience with Creo or similar advanced CAD tools for component and vehicle design.
Background in both mechanical and electrical aspects of vehicle design is beneficial.
Experience working within established engineering standards, drawing standards, and company procedures.
Prior involvement in preparing technical proposals, quotations, reports, and presentations.
Experience providing mentorship or guidance to junior engineers, designers, or technicians.
Familiarity with analytical and mathematical modeling techniques to optimize system performance.
Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams and external suppliers on engineering projects.
Work Environment
This role operates in a professional engineering environment focused on the design and development of heavy-duty vehicle components and systems. Work is primarily performed in an office and engineering lab setting using high-level CAD tools such as Creo and other engineering software for analysis, modeling, and documentation. The position involves regular collaboration with cross-functional teams, including design, production, and supply chain, as well as communication with external suppliers and customers. Typical work hours follow a standard business schedule, with flexibility depending on project deadlines and coordination needs. The environment emphasizes adherence to engineering standards, structured documentation, and clear communication, with professional attire appropriate to an office and technical setting.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Oshkosh, WI.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $40.00 - $55.00/hr.
