Job Description:

  • Serves as shift charge person in the absence of department leadership, prioritizing work to ensure instrumentation and equipment availability. Ensures safe work practices for all employees, monitors staff use of PPE in decontamination area, and takes appropriate action in emergency situations. Participates in new employee orientation, on-the-job training, in-service education, and facility process improvement initiatives.

  • Oversees and monitors supply and equipment inventory required for the department. Rotates assignments among various areas within the department, including decontamination, surgical tray assembly, sterilization processes, and equipment management. Operates complex sterilization equipment and selects the correct method of sterilization based on manufacturers’ instructions for use (IFU). Utilizes recall process for sterilization failures and notifies leadership of positive results.

  • Communicates effectively and uses the chain of command to resolve issues. Monitors sterilization practices, keeps accurate records, and takes corrective action if sterilization parameters are not met. Monitors work environment to ensure infection control standards are met, ensures daily cleaning, and takes corrective action for environmental controls. Identifies and resolves issues associated with malfunctioning equipment.

  • Responds to problem calls from all customers and communicates professionally with hospital team members. Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Ability to communicate effectively

• Knowledge of surgical instrumentation and medical terminology

• Ability to understand the needs of the customer and respond in a pro-active, courteous, professional, and efficient manner

• Ability to adapt to change and work in an environment that requires flexibility

• Ability to lead others and work under stress and tight deadlines

• Understand the principles of microbiology, aseptic principles and techniques, and infection control

• Knowledge of prevention of cross-contamination and the critical nature of nosocomial infections

• Knowledge of instrument tracking software and related computer skills

• Ability to read, write, and communicate in English

• Knowledge of basic computer skills and inventory control

• Ability to follow and communicate written or verbal instructions accurately

• Capable of lifting 35 lbs. independently

• Knowledge of all Central Sterile equipment and supplies

• Knowledge of all instrumentation and processing procedures

• Ability to effectively train new staff in department job responsibilities and protocols

• Ability to maintain appropriate inventory management

• Serves as the primary point of contact for OR for instrument issues

• Previous management skills

• Strong background in all areas of Central Supply

• Ability to demonstrate the mission and values of the organization

• Ability to perform as Supervisor in the event of Supervisor/Manager absence

Education:

• Associate [Preferred]

• High School Grad or Equiv [Required]

• Technical/Vocational School [Preferred]

Work Experience:

• 1+ experience [Preferred]

Licenses and Certifications:

• Certified Registered Central Service Tech (CRCST) [Required] OR

• Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) [Required]

Pay Range:

$19.23 - $30.77
