Town of Oriental Police Officer in Oriental, North Carolina

The Town of Oriental is looking for a permanent full-time credentialed Police Officer, willing to start immediately on a full-time and flexible schedule.

The ideal candidate will be an experienced officer, able to interact with an eclectic mix of visitors in a small town transient boating community setting. The officer must work well in cooperation with the Pamlico County Sheriffs Office and various other agencies on behalf of the Town. Participation in local scheduled in-service training and joint exercises and operations are required.

Distinguishing characteristics of the class

The candidates most likely to be hired will have 5+ years of varied experience with law enforcement, all required credentials, ability to handle intermittent large crowds for special events several times per year, work independently as well as cooperatively, and attend court dates as required in Pamlico County. Work is performed in accordance with General Ordinance police policy, Town Policy and Ordinances, and state and federal law. Work requires the application of law enforcement skill as well as extensive application of independent judgment and initiative, and ability to exercise sound judgment in emergency and unusual situations. The employee may be subject to extreme weather, dangerous persons, heavy traffic, loud noise, and hazardous spills. Work in Law enforcement is subject to standards of OSHA on blood borne pathogens. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Chief of Police and is evaluated annually. The employee will be required to maintain video evidence, produce monthly reports in a timely manner for Manager and Board review, and be able to concisely and effectively make presentations.

Essential Duties

Meets with citizens, business owners, civic officials in an ongoing effort to prevent crime and implement community-oriented policing programs; promotes the departments goals through individual contact and meetings with civic groups and other organizations. Serves as a representative from Oriental on regional law enforcement planning.

Recruitment and Selection

Thorough knowledge of law enforcement and community oriented policing techniques, principles, and practices, methods and equipment. Thorough knowledge of state and federal laws, local ordinances, and policies of Oriental. Thorough knowledge of physical, economic, and social characteristics of Oriental. Skill in the use of firearms and other police equipment, and in the application of self defense tactics. Ability to file investigative reports, operate police vehicles and equipment. Ability to perform searches of persons, vehicles, and structures, according to warrants issued. Ability to communicate with citizens, including juveniles, and the elderly, by giving directions and information, mediating disputes and advising of rights and processes. Demonstrate communication skills in court and other formal settings. Collect and catalogue evidence that provide the basis of criminal offenses and indicate the presence of dangerous substances.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to physically perform the basic operational functions of standing, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Must be able to perform work exerting up to 50 lbs of force occasionally, 15 lbs frequently and/or a negligible amount of force constantly. Must possess the visual acuity to prepare and analyze data, operate a computer.

Must possess a high standard of honesty and integrity. Falsifying, omitting, or misrepresenting information on any submitted document is unacceptable. Financial and driving records must indicate a high level of responsibility needed to succeed. You must have a history of lawful conduct. Your past behavior and ch ices must demonstrate positive traits that will support your candidacy for Police Officer and reflect favorably on your character. You must respect the rights of all people and have an appreciation for the diversity that characterizes the Town of Oriental. A history of domestic violence, physical altercations, or discourteous, abusive, or violent treatment of others may indicate a lack of self-discipline, an unwillingness or inability to cooperate, or a disregard for the rights of others.

Prior to assignment

Must be fully credentialed according to North Carolina Justice Training and Standards Commission, possess a valid NC Drivers license, minimum education requirements of high school graduation, no felony convictions, pass drug screening, honorable discharge if former military, legal to work in U.S., and pass a psychological assessment.

Automatic disqualifiers

According to the NC Criminal Justice Training and Standard Title 12 NCAC Chapter 98 .0101/98 .0111

Felony Criminal History:

  • Any felony convictions;
  • Any crime for which the conviction could have been punishment of more than two years incarceration;

Misdemeanors Criminal History:

  • A crime or unlawful act defined as a "Class B misdemeanor" within the five year period prior to the elate of application for employment;
  • Four or more crimes or unlawful acts defined as "Class B misdemeanors" by the NC Training and Standards Commission regardless of the date of conviction;
  • Four or more crimes or unlawful acts defined as "Class A misdemeanors" except the applicant may be employed if the last conviction occurred more than two years prior to the date of an application for employment
