Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Public Works Inspector to support highway, bridge, and rail transportation projects in Orange, CA or Los Angeles, CA on a part-time or on-call basis . The inspector will monitor construction activities to ensure work is performed in accordance with project plans, specifications, safety requirements, and applicable public works standards .

This role requires field experience inspecting transportation infrastructure projects and the ability to document contractor work, identify issues, and coordinate with project engineers and contractors to maintain quality and compliance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform field inspections of highway, bridge, and/or rail construction activities to verify compliance with approved plans, specifications, and contract requirements.

  • Observe and document contractor work including grading, concrete placement, structural components, drainage, utilities, track work, and related infrastructure .

  • Monitor construction materials and workmanship to ensure compliance with project specifications and applicable standards .

  • Prepare daily inspection reports , field notes, and photographic documentation of construction progress.

  • Coordinate with project engineers, contractors, and project managers to resolve field issues.

  • Verify quantities of installed work and assist with documentation for progress payments if required.

  • Identify potential safety concerns or non-conforming work and report findings to project management.

  • Attend project meetings and coordinate with project stakeholders as needed.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • HS + 8 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.

  • MVR check required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience inspecting public works construction projects , preferably in highway, bridge, or rail infrastructure .

  • Working knowledge of construction plans, specifications, and inspection procedures for transportation projects.

  • Experience preparing daily reports and field documentation .

  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical specifications.

  • Strong attention to detail and communication skills.

  • Ability to travel to project sites and work outdoors in varying field conditions.

  • Experience with Caltrans Standard Specifications and Standard Plans .

  • Experience working in an active railroad environment.

  • PE License in State of California.

  • Experience with rail or transit infrastructure projects .

  • Familiarity with construction management or inspection software used for field reporting.

Additional Information

Offered rate of compensation will be based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. The range for this position is $60 to $72.
