Job Summary and Essential Job Duties:
As a Senior Optical Systems Assembly Technician, you will lead the hands-on assembly, alignment, and verification of complex optomechanical systems in a cleanroom environment. Leveraging your extensive experience and technical expertise, you will perform critical tasks with minimal supervision while mentoring junior technicians and supporting cross-functional engineering teams. You will be responsible for ensuring that all assemblies meet precise specifications, rigorous tolerances, and quality standards, while also driving process improvements and contributing to documentation and inspection readiness.
Through On the Job Training (OJT), the Senior Optical Systems Assembly Technician will:
Independently assemble precision optical and mechanical sub-systems from engineering drawings, models, and detailed work instructions
Conduct advanced optical measurements including focal length, wavefront error, beam alignment, and centration error using interferometers and other metrology tools
Interpret GD&T and complex technical drawings to troubleshoot and resolve assembly issues
Lead root cause investigations and corrective action efforts in collaboration with engineering and quality teams
Mentor and train entry-level and mid-level assembly technicians in techniques, safety, and documentation practices
Support prototype builds, engineering changes, and new process validation
Drive continuous improvement initiatives related to workflow, tooling, documentation, and quality
Ensure compliance with cleanroom protocols, safety standards, and documentation requirements
Accurately maintain records for inspection, traceability, and process control
Coordinate with production, engineering, and quality teams to meet delivery timelines and customer requirements
Advancement through the Senior Optical Systems Assembly Technician ranks is attained via increasing levels of education, experience, industrial skills, math skills, computing skills, responsibility and leadership potential and effectiveness.
Education Requirements:
High School Diploma or GED required.
Associate’s or technical degree in optics, photonics, engineering, or a related field strongly preferred.
Minimum Requirements:
Minimum 5 years of experience in optics, optomechanical assembly, or high-precision manufacturing
Demonstrated proficiency in advanced optical testing and alignment procedures
Experienced in cleanroom operations and adherence to ISO cleanliness standards.
Other Skills and Experience:
Ability to read, analyze and interpret technical drawings.
Expert knowledge of optical metrology, interferometry, and alignment tools
Proficient in reading and interpreting complex technical drawings and GD&T
Strong leadership and mentoring skills
Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced production environment
Strong communication and documentation skills
Comfortable using software tools including Microsoft Office, ERP systems, and digital work instructions
Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
Eagerness to learn new skills and techniques
Excellent work ethic and attention to detail
Strong team collaboration skills
Work Requirements:
Physical Demands:
Compliance with cleanroom protocols, including refraining from smoking or vaping 30 minutes prior to entering the cleanroom.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch: and talk and hear.
The job may involve prolong periods of sitting/standing.
Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp.
Work Environment:
This position works in a manufacturing environment. The noise level can vary from quiet to loud frequencies.
May involve the use of oils and solvents.
Generally works in a clean environment and works to maintain the environment as such.
May require area specific safety training
The employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes
May be assigned to various production areas as needs require.
