Job Title: Controls Engineer

Job Description

The Controls Engineer is responsible for designing, programming, installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and improving plant manufacturing equipment and automation systems. This role works closely with the Engineering team on capital projects and system upgrades to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation of automated production processes.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and implement automation solutions for plant manufacturing equipment and systems.

  • Program, configure, and modify PLC-based control systems, with a strong focus on Rockwell and Allen-Bradley platforms.

  • Install and commission automation equipment, including control panels and related electrical components, in manufacturing facilities.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues with PLC programs, automation systems, and control hardware to minimize downtime.

  • Perform mechanical and electrical troubleshooting on production equipment and associated control systems.

  • Interpret and update wiring diagrams, electrical schematics, and control documentation to support system design and maintenance.

  • Collaborate with the Engineering team on capital projects and system upgrades, contributing to project planning, design, and execution.

  • Continuously improve existing automation and control systems to enhance reliability, safety, and production efficiency.

  • Ensure that all automation and control work complies with relevant standards, internal procedures, and safety requirements.

  • Provide technical support and knowledge transfer to operations, maintenance, and engineering personnel regarding automation systems.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum of 5 years of programming experience in industrial automation or controls engineering.

  • Experience with PLC programming, including development, modification, and troubleshooting of control logic.

  • Hands-on experience with Rockwell automation platforms and Allen-Bradley PLCs.

  • Strong troubleshooting skills for both PLC-based control systems and related automation equipment.

  • Ability to perform mechanical troubleshooting on manufacturing equipment.

  • Proficiency in reading, interpreting, and creating wiring diagrams and electrical schematics.

  • Solid understanding of automation, electrical controls engineering, and industrial control panels.

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, or an associate’s degree with at least 7 years of industrial programming experience.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working in industrial or manufacturing environments, preferably with automated production lines.

  • Experience supporting capital projects and system upgrades within an engineering or operations team.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a focus on root cause analysis and continuous improvement.

  • Effective communication skills to collaborate with engineering, maintenance, and operations teams.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects while maintaining attention to detail and safety.

Work Environment

The role supports manufacturing facilities that produce liquid products for automotive applications, including oils, washing solutions, lubricants, and similar materials. The position can be remote with up to 50% travel to manufacturing sites, or it can be based on-site at one of the facilities, depending on preference and business needs. Work takes place in active plant environments with automated equipment, control panels, and industrial electrical systems, requiring comfort around machinery, process equipment, and typical manufacturing conditions. Travel may include visits to multiple locations across different states. Standard safety practices and appropriate personal protective equipment are required in production areas.

Job Type & Location

This is a Permanent position based out of Omaha, NE.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $95000.00 - $120000.00/yr.
