Garmin Project Manager 1 Aviation Engineering (Part Management) in Olathe, Kansas

Overview

We are seeking a full-time Project Manager 1 Engineering in our Olathe, KS location. In this role, you will be responsible for managing small-to-medium size engineering projects of average complexity including execution of Project Plans and reporting of project status.

Essential Functions

  • Lead electronic component lifecycle and obsolescence management activities to ensure long-term product continuity and minimize supply chain risk

  • Drive cross-functional impact assessments (Engineering, Supply Chain, Manufacturing, Quality, Finance, Service) to evaluate technical, operational, and financial implications of component changes

  • Coordinate stakeholder alignment and formal approval processes for part substitutions, last-time buys, redesigns, and risk mitigation strategies

  • Develop and maintain obsolescence mitigation roadmaps aligned with product lifecycle and business objectives

  • Prepare executive-level summaries outlining risk exposure, financial impact, mitigation options, and recommended actions

  • Partner with engineering teams to evaluate alternate components and qualification requirements while balancing cost, performance, and schedule impacts

  • Collaborate with Supply Chain to negotiate last-time buys and strategies

  • Establish standardized processes and governance for part lifecycle management and cross-functional decision-making

  • Maintain centralized tracking systems and dashboards to provide visibility into component risk, mitigation status, and business impact

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for electronic component lifecycle risk across multiple product lines

  • Learn and apply project management skills on small to medium size engineering projects of average complexity, seeking input from mentor and/or supervisor as needed

  • Learn basic product domain, understand established processes and how to use them

  • Support process improvement activities

  • Drive assigned project to closure, learn good judgment in identifying issues and risks, mitigation plans and when to escalate issues to mentor or direct supervisor for direction

  • Demonstrate ability to maintain clear project status, documentation, and reporting within small to mid-size projects with established tools

  • Learn communication skills, including effective listening, responding appropriately and managing difficult conversations

  • Build relationships and learn to gain alignment with project team

  • Learn to solve conflicts through understanding of interdependencies of and development of effective relationships between the development team(s)

  • Learn the ability to lead effective and efficient team meetings

  • Ensure team members/stakeholders are appropriately informed of project scope, schedule and cost

  • Learn project ownership with high involvement from Team Leader/Mentor, learning to act as contact for project needs

  • Understand Garmin’s Mission, Vision, Values and Quality Policy and enthusiastically exhibits a desire to see Garmin succeed

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor Degree in a technical discipline OR an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience

  • Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule) with the demonstrated ability to apply learned knowledge

  • Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills

  • Demonstrated ability to learn how to use and apply engineering and project management tools

  • Must be team-oriented, possess a positive attitude, work well with others, have excellent time management, organizational and follow-up skills

  • Computer skills in MS Office Suite (Microsoft Word, Excel, Project, and PowerPoint) or similar

Desired Qualifications

  • Relevant knowledge, experience and/or training in avionics systems and/or aviation

  • Relevant knowledge in software and/or electrical engineering

  • Relevant experience in one or more of the specialization areas noted below (opportunities for specialization exist as a Garmin Project Manager, some of which are listed below):
