Industrial Mechanic
Job Description
This role focuses on maintaining, troubleshooting, and improving industrial production equipment in a high-volume horticultural manufacturing facility. You will perform preventive and corrective maintenance, support equipment installations and adjustments, and ensure that mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electromechanical systems operate safely and efficiently. You will work hands-on with automated mixing, conveying, and packaging equipment to minimize downtime and support continuous production.
Responsibilities
Assist with the fabrication, installation, and adjustment of production equipment to support reliable and efficient operations.
Perform maintenance work in line with the preventive maintenance program to reduce unplanned downtime and extend equipment life.
Identify required repairs on production equipment and either resolve them directly or escalate when additional support is needed.
Notify your immediate supervisor of potential issues, hazards, or repairs that you cannot resolve on your own to maintain a safe and compliant workplace.
Support the installation of new equipment and make necessary mechanical, hydraulic, or pneumatic adjustments to ensure proper operation.
Adjust, replace, and clean parts or equipment as needed to maintain optimal performance and product quality.
Perform minor welding, electrical, or carpentry repairs on equipment and infrastructure when required.
Read and interpret mechanical blueprints, plans, and schematics to install and maintain mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems accurately.
Troubleshoot mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and electromechanical automation systems to diagnose issues and implement effective solutions.
Carry out both preventive and corrective maintenance tasks on industrial machinery, automated lines, and support systems.
Work safely around industrial mixing, conveying, screening, and packaging equipment, following all site procedures and safety guidelines.
Collaborate with supervisors and team leaders to coordinate maintenance activities with production schedules and minimize disruption.
Essential Skills
Registered 3rd-year or higher apprentice, journeyperson, or Red Seal Industrial Mechanic / Millwright qualification.
Proven experience with electromechanical automation systems in an industrial environment.
Hands-on experience working with hydraulic systems, including installation, adjustment, and troubleshooting.
Hands-on experience working with pneumatic systems, including installation, adjustment, and troubleshooting.
Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to maintain, repair, and adjust industrial machinery and production equipment.
Experience reading and interpreting mechanical blueprints, plans, and schematics.
Experience with installation and commissioning of industrial equipment and systems.
Experience in preventive and corrective maintenance for industrial or manufacturing equipment.
Ability to perform minor welding repairs safely and effectively.
Basic electrical troubleshooting skills related to industrial equipment.
Demonstrated troubleshooting skills for mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and automation issues.
Ability to follow a structured preventive maintenance program and document work completed.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Red Seal Industrial Mechanic / Millwright certification is a strong asset.
Experience in industrial maintenance within manufacturing, processing, or agricultural facilities.
Familiarity with schematic reading for mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and basic electrical systems.
Experience working with automated mixing, conveying, screening, or packaging equipment.
Minor welding experience, including basic fabrication or repair of components.
Comfort working on maintenance repairs that may include mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and light electrical tasks.
Strong attention to detail and a safety-focused mindset when working around industrial equipment.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, production-driven environment.

Work Environment
The role is based at a large-scale horticultural mixing and processing plant in Oakbank, Manitoba, operating year-round as an industrial and agricultural manufacturing site. The facility produces peat-based growing media for professional agriculture and greenhouse customers using Canadian peat moss and highly automated mixing and packaging systems. The site includes peat screening and processing equipment, industrial mixing systems, conveying and bulk handling equipment, and automated bagging and packaging lines. Production operations run extensively, including 24/7 during peak season, with four shifts in the summer. The position follows a two-week rotating shift schedule (subject to change), with typical hours in the late afternoon and evening (such as 5:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. or 7:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m., subject to change). Overtime may apply after 8 hours in a shift, depending on site policies. You will work closely with production leadership and team leaders in a busy, equipment-intensive environment that requires adherence to safety procedures and appropriate workwear and safety gear suitable for an industrial plant.

The pay range for this position is $26.00 - $46.50/hr.
