Job Title: EHS Specialist

Job Description

The EHS Specialist will lead and support environmental, health, and safety initiatives across office, laboratory, production, and warehouse environments. This role focuses on driving continuous improvement, maintaining regulatory compliance, and promoting a strong safety culture through hands-on engagement, training, and partnership with operations. The position is a six-month contract role providing coverage during a maternity leave and requires someone who can operate independently as a site EHS resource.

Responsibilities

  • Support and drive continuous environmental, health, and safety (EHS) improvement projects across the facility.

  • Own, maintain, and continuously update site safety programs, policies, and documentation.

  • Lead and participate in daily safety observations and safety engagements with employees in all areas of the facility.

  • Conduct thorough incident investigations, including root cause analysis, and develop and track corrective and preventive actions.

  • Perform and document risk assessments and near-miss investigations to proactively identify and mitigate hazards.

  • Execute internal EHS audits and support external regulatory and customer audits by preparing documentation and participating in audit activities.

  • Maintain compliance with OSHA (Federal and Illinois), EPA, and other applicable environmental and safety regulations.

  • Support EHS requirements in Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) regulated environments, including laboratories and production areas.

  • Facilitate safety trainings for small groups, large groups, and one-on-one sessions, ensuring content is clear, practical, and engaging.

  • Partner closely with operations teams to identify hazards, assess risks, and implement proactive risk mitigation strategies.

  • Track, trend, and manage safety metrics, incidents, and corrective actions, using data to drive continuous improvement.

  • Review relevant data and camera footage as part of incident investigations and hazard assessments, where appropriate.

  • Communicate investigation findings and root causes clearly to coworkers and provide practical, actionable safety recommendations.

  • Operate as an independent EHS resource on site, providing guidance, coaching, and support to employees and leaders.

  • Participate in or lead internal audit activities related to EHS and support broader internal audit efforts as needed.

  • Support continuous improvement initiatives and safety consulting activities within the facility.

  • Move frequently between offices, laboratories, production areas, and warehouse spaces to maintain a strong floor presence.

  • Occasionally lift laboratory equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds as part of routine EHS activities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.

  • Minimum of 1–2+ years of experience in EHS leadership roles, preferably within a manufacturing environment.

Work Environment

This position is a six-month contract role to provide coverage during a maternity leave. The role primarily operates on first shift, with occasional need to provide coverage or support on an off shift as required by business needs. The EHS Specialist will work across all areas of a modern, well-maintained facility, including offices, laboratories, production lines, and warehouse spaces. The facility operates under GMP standards and may incorporate HACCP and SQF practices, particularly in food manufacturing environments. The work requires frequent movement throughout the site and comfort working in both lab and production settings. The role may involve occasional lifting of laboratory equipment or materials weighing up to 50 pounds. Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $40.00/hr.
