Saint-Gobain Senior EHS & Sustainability Engineer I in NORTHBORO, Massachusetts
As the Sr. EHS & Sustainability Engineer I, you will play a pivotal role in advancing the Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS), Sustainability, and 5S culture at Saint-Gobain North America's R&D Center in Northboro, MA. Reporting to the Strategic EHS&S Manager, this role exists to ensure that our R&D operations remain safe, compliant, sustainable, and continuously improving. Your expertise will enable the organization to meet regulatory requirements, achieve corporate sustainability goals, and strengthen a proactive safety culture across diverse research and technical environments.
You will lead and support key initiatives that directly contribute to environmental performance, operational efficiency, and employee wellbeing. By serving as a subject matter expert, training resource, and cross-functional partner, you will empower teams to work safely, reduce environmental impact, and adopt best in class workplace practices.
Core Responsibilities:
EHS management and regulatory compliance
Sustainability program development and reporting
5S / continuous improvement implementation
Training, coaching, and competency building
Technical support for labs, pilot facilities, and site operations
Collaborative leadership across R&D, contractors, and corporate EHS networks
What You Will Do:
Develop, implement, and monitor EHS programs, procedures, and policies to ensure compliance with federal, state, local, and corporate requirements.
Lead risk assessments, safety audits, incident investigations, and EHS training to build competency and awareness across the R&D organization.
Advance the site's Sustainability Roadmap by designing and managing programs tied to energy, water, and waste reduction, and tracking environmental performance indicators.
Champion 5S workplace organization, conduct audits, facilitate training, and drive continuous improvement projects across site laboratories, pilot spaces, and offices.
Serve as a subject matter expert in EHS, Sustainability, and 5S, supporting R&D teams, contractors, and the North American/global EHS&S network.
Influence and support cross functional groups to adopt safer, more sustainable practices using the principles of Trust, Empowerment, and Collaboration (TEC).
Education Requirements
Required
- BS degree with 7+ years of experience (Engineering discipline, EHS, Sustainability, or Environmental Sciences preferred)
OR
- MS degree with 3+ years of experience (Engineering discipline, EHS, Sustainability, or Environmental Sciences preferred)
Work Experience
Required
7+ years (BS) or 3+ years (MS) of diverse EHS experience, ideally in a lab or R&D environment
At least 3+ years of EHS management experience, including understanding and applying OSHA, EPA, and other regulatory requirements
At least 3+ years of experience leading or supporting EHS, Sustainability, and 5S training, programs, or culture initiatives
Strong communication experience with both technical and non_technical audiences
Preferred
2+ years Sustainability experience (Scope 1/2/3, energy reduction, renewable energy projects, sustainability programs)
1+ years implementing 5S / continuous improvement initiatives
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Required Technical Skills
Strong fluency in English; excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
Strong computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office
Experience with EHS management systems and tools
Required Interpersonal / Soft Skills
Customer focus with professional demeanor, active listening, and timely follow up
Ability to influence without authority using TEC principles (Trust - Empowerment - Collaboration)
Strong organizational agility and managerial courage
Effective cross-functional collaboration with scientists, engineers, technicians, leadership, and contractors

Proven problem-solving skills, including risk anticipation, root-cause analysis, and data-driven decision making
Accountability, ownership, and reliable follow through
Preferred Skills
Project management: organization, attention to detail, ability to juggle multiple priorities
Experience coordinating work with contractors and external agencies
Knowledge of ISO 14001, 45001, 50001 (preferred certification knowledge)
Licenses & Certifications
Required
- RCRA & DOT training (within 1 month of hire)
Preferred
CSP certification
Working knowledge of ISO management systems (14001 / 45001 / 50001)
Physical Requirements
Ability to push, pull, or lift up to 50 lbs as needed
Frequent standing, walking, bending, sitting, repetitive motions, and use of hands/fingers
Frequent need for talking and hearing
Occasional climbing, stooping, kneeling, and entering confined spaces
Vision requirements for inspection and detailed work
Working Conditions
Primarily onsite at an R&D center with exposure to laboratories, pilot areas, mechanical spaces, and office environments
Potential exposure to:
o Noise, chemicals, fumes, dust, heat/cold, ventilation systems, hazardous materials, and equipment in motion
Requires use of PPE (safety glasses, hearing protection, lab coat, etc.)
Must be comfortable navigating active research and technical areas
Occasional travel (<5%) to other sites for training and best_practice sharing

Certain locations require pay information be provided in job postings. Saint-Gobain aims to deliver a comprehensive Total Rewards package to support our employees’ wellbeing and help improve daily life for themselves and their families. We believe in the importance of pay transparency in what we offer potential candidates. Provided is the national pay range for this position which is $92,000 to $142,000 per year. However, the base pay offered may vary depending on geographic region, internal equity, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors.
In addition to base salary, this position is eligible for an annual bonus. The targeted bonus amount is 12% of base salary based on company and individual performance measures. The Total Target Cash range (base pay and annual bonus) for this position, is $103,040 to $159,040. Bonus payments are part of variable compensation and by nature can vary based on company and individual performance and is not a guarantee.
