DESCRIPTION:
As a Refrigeration Mechanic for our Ultra-Low Temperature & Liquid Nitrogen Systems at Thermo Fisher Scientific, you will be responsible for the service, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of customer ultra-low temperature (ULT) refrigeration systems and liquid nitrogen (LN₂) storage equipment. These systems are critical to preserving biological samples, pharmaceuticals, vaccines, and research materials that directly support global health and scientific advancement.
In this role, you will install and maintain cascade refrigeration systems, cryogenic storage freezers, LN₂ distribution systems, and associated controls. You will diagnose mechanical, electrical, and refrigeration-related issues, ensuring optimal performance, temperature stability, and regulatory compliance. Working in laboratory, clinical, and research environments, you will deliver high-quality technical service while supporting customer operational continuity and sample integrity.
Qualifications & Experience:
Trade qualified Refrigeration Mechanic (Certificate III in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration or equivalent) within NSW required
Current Refrigerant Handling Licence (RHL) issued by ARCtick required
Refrigerant Trading Authorisation (RTA) preferred (if applicable to role)
Current NSW White Card (General Construction Induction) required
Valid NSW Driver Licence required
Minimum 3–5 years of hands-on experience servicing commercial or industrial refrigeration systems
Desirable Skills:
Experience with ultra-low temperature (ULT) freezers, cascade refrigeration systems, or cryogenic refrigeration systems strongly preferred
Experience working with Liquid Nitrogen (LN₂) systems, cryogenic storage tanks, pressure vessels, and associated safety systems preferred
Strong knowledge of refrigeration cycles, compressors (including cascade systems), condensers, evaporators, and expansion devices
Sound understanding of Australian refrigeration and WHS regulations, including safe refrigerant handling practices
Experience working with temperature monitoring, alarm, and control systems
Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, P&IDs, and technical documentation
Strong electrical troubleshooting capability (single-phase and three-phase systems); Restricted Electrical Licence highly regarded
Knowledge of risk assessments, Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS), and permit-to-work systems
Strong diagnostic and problem-solving skills
Excellent communication and customer service skills
Ability to work independently within laboratory, hospital, and research environments
Ability to respond to urgent service calls to protect critical biological samples
Experience documenting service activities using CMMS or service management systems
Physical ability to lift up to 23 kg and work in mechanical rooms, cold storage, and laboratory environments
