Job Title: Process Technician

Job Description

The Process Technician sets up, optimizes, and maintains injection molding processes to consistently produce high‑quality thermoplastic parts. This role combines hands-on mechanical work with a scientific approach to processing, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement of molding equipment and secondary operations. The technician ensures safe, efficient changeovers, minimizes downtime and defects, and collaborates closely with operators, engineers, and leadership to keep production running smoothly.

Responsibilities

  • Apply a scientific approach to processing injection molding machines to optimize cycle times, reduce defects, and achieve the highest quality parts.

  • Set up and operate injection molding presses to mold products from thermoplastic materials according to work order specifications.

  • Safely and efficiently install and remove dies and molds using clamps, bolts, hand tools, and overhead crane/hoist equipment.

  • Read and interpret water diagrams and correctly water molds to support stable processing.

  • Load the correct molding process into the molding machine and develop robust processes when a standard is not available.

  • Mix thermoplastic materials and coloring pigments in mixing machines according to established formulas.

  • Modify existing robot programs so parts are handled correctly without causing damage to equipment or product.

  • Document all process changes, setups, and adjustments in an accurate and timely manner.

  • Communicate molding conditions, issues, and changes clearly to operators, engineers, and management.

  • Evaluate molded parts for quality based on established criteria and make necessary process adjustments.

  • Monitor molding processes to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve processing problems and machine malfunctions.

  • Repair and adjust molding equipment as needed to obtain desired operating results.

  • Perform preventive maintenance and periodic checks on assigned equipment as prescribed or instructed.

  • Set up and implement both pre‑molding and post‑molding secondary operations to support production requirements.

  • Handle materials safely, including manually switching over materials used on machinery.

  • Execute preventive maintenance tasks to maintain uptime and extend equipment life.

  • Prepare equipment for shutdown at the end of the shift or as needed, ensuring heats and auxiliary equipment are properly adjusted and secured.

  • Follow lockout/tagout and other safety procedures during maintenance, changeovers, and repairs.

Essential Skills

  • Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to work hands-on with molding and auxiliary equipment.

  • Experience working with injection mold machines and molding processes.

  • Proficiency in setting up injection molding presses for thermoplastic materials.

  • Ability to install and remove molds and dies using hand tools, clamps, bolts, and overhead cranes/hoists.

  • Ability to troubleshoot molding machinery and resolve processing issues.

  • Experience with changeovers, including material and mold changeovers.

  • Capability to perform light electrical work, such as changing fuses, when necessary.

  • Familiarity with preventive maintenance and basic maintenance repair on molding equipment.

  • Ability to read and interpret water diagrams and correctly water molds.

  • Comfort modifying robot programs to handle molded parts safely.

  • Understanding of lockout/tagout safety procedures.

  • Ability to evaluate part quality against established criteria and adjust processes accordingly.

  • Effective communication skills to collaborate with operators, engineers, and leadership.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a busy production environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience as a Process Technician, Change Over Technician, or Mold Operator.

  • Experience with epoxy or resin molds and related tooling is beneficial.

  • Experience with injection molding setup, die installation, and molding process optimization.

  • Familiarity with CNC machining environments and precision manufacturing is a plus.

  • Comfort working with thermoplastics and color mixing according to formulas.

  • Detail-oriented mindset with strong documentation and recordkeeping skills.

Work Environment

The role is based in a clean, well-organized, temperature-controlled, and well-lit production facility with natural light and a busy, active manufacturing floor. The environment includes an in-house tool shop and injection molding room within an ISO 9001:2015 certified operation, supporting high-precision work for industries such as aerospace, medical, transportation, recreational, and oil and gas. The facility utilizes advanced CNC machining equipment, including lathes, routers, mills, grinders, crane lifts, and systems with pallet changing, four- or five-axis capabilities, and wire EDM. Injection molding presses range from 65 to 1,000 tons and process over 250 materials, with in-house mold maintenance and inventory management for high-volume items. The production floor also supports investment casting tooling and rapid prototyping, with precision optical measuring equipment to verify complex part geometries. You will work alongside a busy third shift team of around 22 people, including working supervisors, in a structured, fast-moving production environment.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $52000.00 - $66000.00/yr.
