Job Title: CNC Machinist

Job Description

The CNC Machinist manufactures detailed parts and tools from blueprints, sketches, drawings, or verbal instructions using a variety of computer-controlled and mechanically controlled machine tools. This role sets up and operates mills, lathes, CNC machine tools, grinders, and related equipment while performing precise measurements to maintain tight tolerances. The CNC Machinist calculates dimensions, installs and aligns cutting tools and workpieces, monitors machine feed and speed, and inspects completed products to ensure they meet specifications. The position may also support prototype and experimental machining activities and assist engineers with the design, development, and improvement of new and existing products.

Responsibilities

  • Set up, operate, and maintain CNC milling and turning centers in accordance with complex blueprints, specifications, and work instructions.

  • Retrieve and review job-related information, including job routings, part drawings, tool lists, and work instructions, to ensure accurate part production.

  • Select and utilize appropriate cutting tools, fixtures, and work holding methods for various materials and machining processes.

  • Perform machine setups for vertical and horizontal mills, CNC lathes, and other shop equipment to support stable, repeat-production parts.

  • Use precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, and other gauges to calculate dimensions and verify that parts meet required tolerances.

  • Measure and examine completed products for defects and verify that all surfaces and features conform to engineering drawings and GD&T specifications.

  • Monitor machine feed rates, speeds, and tool conditions during operation, making adjustments as needed to maintain quality and efficiency.

  • Perform in-process and final inspections, including use of CMM equipment when required, to ensure compliance with stringent quality control standards.

  • Document manufactured quantities, inspection results, and required process information in the ERP system accurately and in a timely manner.

  • Perform CNC program edits and adjust G-code parameters as needed to improve part quality or resolve machining issues within established guidelines.

  • Assist in developing new machining methods, tooling approaches, and setups for complex or prototype parts in collaboration with engineering.

  • Support engineers in the design, development, and evaluation of new products by providing machining expertise and recommending product or manufacturing improvements.

  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to optimize machining efficiency, reduce waste, and improve throughput and quality.

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, consistently following all safety policies and procedures.

  • Handle, move, and position materials and workpieces safely, including lifting and moving items up to 50 pounds as needed.

  • Follow ITAR-related procedures and requirements to ensure compliance with applicable regulations.

  • Communicate effectively with team members, quality personnel, and engineering to resolve issues and coordinate work.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support production and shop operations.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum of 5+ years of relevant CNC machining experience.

  • Proficiency in setting up and operating CNC milling and turning centers, including vertical and horizontal mills and CNC lathes.

  • Hands-on experience with machine setup, including work holding, tool selection, and fixture setup.

  • Ability to read and interpret complex blueprints, engineering drawings, and GD&T specifications.

  • Skilled in using precision measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, and other inspection equipment.

  • Experience performing CNC program edits and working with G-code.

  • Working knowledge of machining processes, including milling, turning, and general machine shop practices.

  • Ability to perform detailed inspections and verify parts against customer specifications and requirements.

  • Strong basic math skills, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and working with fractions.

  • Basic computer skills and ability to document work in an ERP or similar system.

  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality parts.

  • Demonstrated problem-solving abilities in a machining or manufacturing environment.

  • Ability to understand and strictly follow safety requirements and shop procedures.

  • Strong teamwork and communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with co-workers.

  • Ability to maintain a clean and organized work area and keep equipment in good working order.

  • Capability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and stand for long periods.

  • Adequate vision for close and distance work, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus for detailed inspection tasks.

  • Compliance with ITAR-related requirements as applicable to the role.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent, plus advanced training in machining, CNC technology, or a related field.

  • Experience in a machine shop environment with both CNC and conventional machining equipment.

  • Familiarity with CMM operation for dimensional inspection.

  • Experience with axis setup and multi-axis machining is beneficial.

  • Comfort working with ERP systems for routing, documentation, and reporting.

  • Working knowledge of customer-specific specifications and quality requirements.

  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to continuous improvement and process optimization.

  • Interest in or experience supporting engineering with prototype or experimental machining activities.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative mindset to support a team-based environment.

Work Environment

The role is based in a very large, clean, and well-maintained machine shop environment equipped with CNC milling and turning centers, vertical and horizontal mills, CNC lathes, grinders, and precision inspection tools including CMM equipment. The work involves frequent use of hands for handling parts and tools, reaching with arms, and standing for extended periods while operating machinery and performing inspections. Multiple shifts are available: a Day shift from 6:30 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Thursday, a Swing shift from 4:30 pm to 2:45 am Monday through Thursday with an additional shift differential, and a Weekend shift from 5:00 am to 5:30 pm Friday through Sunday with a higher shift differential. The environment emphasizes safety, cleanliness, and organization, with expectations that team members keep their work areas free of debris and follow all safety protocols at all times.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of North Plains, OR.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $40.00/hr.
