Sr. Automation Controls Engineers with Rivian Automotive, LLC in Normal, IL. Prepare RFQs and review vendor proposals for automation equipment from single work cells to entire production shops. Manage vendors from initial specifications through development, design reviews, installation, buy-offs, and start of production (SOP) at Rivians Normal facility. Oversee vendors across the full project lifecycle, including commissioning and initial ramp, while enforcing Rivian standards for hardware, electrical, safety, pneumatic, network, PLC, HMI, robot, SCADA, and MES. Program industrial equipment using IEC 61131-3 standards on Allen-Bradley Rockwell, Siemens, and Beckhoff PLCs with organized, structured, documented, maintainable, and reusable Ladder Logic and Structured Text, validate logic via Process Simulate virtual commissioning with real PLC code. Design, review, and approve intuitive HMI/SCADA screens using FactoryTalk View, WinCC, Ignition, and TwinCAT HMI for fully and semi-automated equipment. Develop electrical schematics using ePLAN and/or AutoCAD Electrical per NFPA79, NEC, and UL508A. Review/approve 480/240/120VAC and 24VDC circuits, pneumatic hardware/circuits, and network topologies with optimized IP allocation. Design, configure, and troubleshoot industrial fieldbus networks (EtherNet/IP, Profinet, EtherCAT), interface PLCs with industrial 6-axis robots (Fanuc, Kawasaki, ABB). Apply Process Simulate expertise to model kinematics, perform collision detection and execute offline programming (OLP), motion path editing, interference zone management, robot calibration, and full program download/upload for all major robot brands. Guide vendors in implementing and enforcing ANSI/RIA15.06- and OSHA-compliant control-reliable safety systems for robots, gantries, conveyors, and high-volume equipment. Establish and execute test plans with MES integration for virtual commissioning, safety validation, FAT, SAT at vendor sites and Rivians Normal, IL facility. Debug and optimize automated processes to minimize cycle time, reduce downtime, enhance availability, improve yield, and elevate quality using Rivian standard controls hardware. Domestic and international travel required up to 25% of the time.\ \ RQMTS: Bachelors degree or foreign equivalent in Electronic Engineering, or a closely related field and 5 years of experience in any occupation involving electrical/electronic engineering and control systems. Experience must include: Developing electrical schematics using ePLAN, AutoCAD Electrical, and electrical standards including NFPA79, National Electrical Code, and UL508A; Programming industrial equipment using IEC 61131-3 standards across major platforms, including Allen-Bradley Rockwell, Siemens, and Beckhoff PLCs; Programming HMIs for fully and semi-automated equipment using FactoryTalk View, WinCC, Ignition, and/or TwinCAT HMI; Interfacing PLCs with industrial 6-axis robots including Fanuc, Kawasaki, and ABB; Virtual commissioning execution using Process Simulate; Designing and troubleshooting common industrial fieldbus networks (EtherNet/IP, Profinet, and EtherCAT) and configuring data communications between machine PLCs and higher-level database systems for data acquisition and control. Salary Range: \$126,000-\$167,000/yr.
