Description

Nauticus is a maritime discovery center located along the waterfront of downtown Norfolk offering a unique form of experiential learning for all ages. Through interactive exhibits and STEM to STERN programming, Nauticus uses the museum, Battleship Wisconsin, sailing center, and Schooner Virginia to tell the story of the maritime environment, industry, and the military.

The Event Support Crew Member will maintain a high standard of cleanliness for the Maritime Center, Battleship, Sailing Center and the Cruise Terminal. Work closely with other teams in a highly dynamic environment supporting daytime operations, events, Cruise and Port of Calls.

Department Hiring Salary: $40,768.00

Essential Functions

Essential functions include but are not limited to:

Housekeeping:

  • Perform general, routine housekeeping duties to include:

  • Dust, mop, vacuum

  • Sanitize restrooms

  • Clean and maintain glass windows, glass doors, and other surfaces.

  • Maintain and re-supply restrooms.

  • Empty trash receptacles, dispose of trash into dumpsters, breakdown boxes for proper disposal.

  • Perform routine housekeeping duties in office spaces (e.g., dust, vacuum, trash, kitchen, refrigerator, etc.).

  • Completes daily assigned tasks (as requested) to ensure all areas remain safe, orderly, and welcoming.

  • Assists with inspection, minor repairs, and general maintenance of housekeeping tools, equipment, and operational assets.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Events/Cruise/Port of calls:

  • Set-up rooms and meeting spaces (e.g., moving furniture, transport boxes in and outside of the facility, setting tables and chairs, etc.)

  • Support increased activity during cruise and port of call days by preparing terminal spaces, assisting with crowd flow equipment and responding promptly to housekeeping or facility needs as they arise.

  • Performs delivery, assembly, and removal of equipment such as tables, chairs, stanchions, and signage to ensure smooth events and cruise passenger flow and operational readiness.

  • Participate in daily Cruise operations as needed.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Overall:

  • Engage with guests throughout the facilities with a positive and approachable demeanor.

  • Demonstrate excellent customer service when interacting with passengers, crew members, coworkers, port officials, and the public.

  • Contribute to a positive and efficient operational environment through clear communication and teamwork.

  • Must be able to stand for extended periods, lift items from ground to above shoulder level, climb, bend, stoop, sit, push, pull, and perform tasks requiring manual dexterity.

Education/Experience

Work requires the ability to read and understand written instructions, to understand simple processes and the routine operation of machines. Level of knowledge equivalent to less than high school or equivalency.

No experience required.

Preferred Education/Experience:

  • One year of housekeeping, events experience preferred; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred License(s) and/or Certification(s):

  • TWIC card eligibility, preferred

Additional Information & Requirements

Work Location: One Waterside Drive, Norfolk, VA 23510

Work Hours: Wednesday through Sunday, and some holidays.

  • Regular full-time and permanent part-time employees may receive paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, employer paid pension plan, basic life insurance, voluntary participation in medical and dental, Section 457 deferred compensation, long-term disability, optional life insurance for self, spouse and children, medical and dependent care reimbursement plans, access to membership in credit union and employer provided parking.

  • Special project/grant employees are generally eligible for the same benefits of regular full-time employees; however, retirement, life insurance and participation in health plans vary depending upon funding and authorization.

  • Temporary/seasonal and part-time employees are generally only eligible for employer provided parking and access to membership in credit union.

  • Retirement

    If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

    If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

  • The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
