Nome Eskimo Community IRA Maintenance Technician in Nome, Alaska

Purpose of Position: The Maintenance Technician I performs progressively responsible manual and semi-skilled labor, completing multi-discipline operational and maintenance work on assigned buildings, facilities, roads, stormwater systems, parks, and other NEC assets. The incumbent typically works as part of a team but may also have individual or specialized assignments. This role supports NECs mission by ensuring the safety, functionality, and appearance of community assets, directly contributing to the well-being of our members and the public. Essential Functions:
Safely operate and maintain a variety of machinery and power equipment (e.g., trucks, trailers, backhoes, loaders, tractors, mowers, sweepers, snowplows, bucket trucks, woodchippers) without direct supervision.
Perform a range of semi-skilled and skilled tasks, including the safe use of chainsaws, drills, weed eaters, blowers, pole saws, and other hand and power tools.
Conduct repairs and maintenance on NEC roadways, stormwater facilities, drainage ditches, parks, and public areas, including pothole repair, vegetation control, and tree removal.
Maintain and repair NEC buildings and facilities, including basic plumbing, carpentry, flooring, painting, and exterior maintenance (roofing, gutters, siding, windows, sidewalks).
Inspect building systems and recommend repairs or improvements.
Remove debris and trash from NEC parks, trails, recreation spaces, grounds, and facilities.
Support NEC events as needed (e.g., setup of tables, tents, extension cords, traffic control).
Apply herbicides in designated areas.
Assist in emergency repairs and provide 24-hour on-call service as needed.
Support snow removal and sanding operations; alternative schedules may be required during severe weather events.
Promote and support workplace safety.
Maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, board members, and the public.
Undertake other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Proficient in the use of hand and power tools and equipment relevant to trades. Basic writing, reading comprehension, and math skills. Basic computer skills and willingness to learn new technology as required. Strong teamwork, problem-solving, interpersonal, adaptability, and time management skills. Good judgment, courtesy, and tact in working with diverse groups, including the public, NEC employees, and personnel from other agencies. Ability to follow written and oral instructions and complete required documentation. Commitment to safety and ability to recognize and address hazards independently. Willingness to work outdoors year-round in all weather conditions and accept call-out status for emergencies. Consistent and punctual attendance. Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent. One year of experience in multi-discipline facilities maintenance or one of the building trades (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, or carpentry) preferred. One year of experience performing manual and semi-skilled labor in construction, road maintenance, or parks preferred. One year of experience or related training using hand and power tools and motorized equipment (e.g., mowers, chainsaws, backhoe, sweepers, snowplows) preferred. Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated cultural competency, respect for Alaska Native culture and values, and willingness to engage with the tribal community.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions, on irregular terrain, and sometimes near roadway tra fic or at remote sites. During severe weather, employees may be exposed to extreme cold or heat and may be required to use protective clothing such as coveralls, rain gear, hard hats, safety vests, masks, boots, goggles, gloves, or shields.
