*** Must be a Resident of Niagara Falls within 6 months of employment ***DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is routine manual work performed as assigned in the various City operating Departments requiring certain abilities and skills in the use of tools and equipment, both powered and nonpowered. Maintenance Worker-1s also operate non-licensed motorized equipment. The employee may assist Maintenance-2s and Maintenance-3s in the performance of a variety of tasks inherent in the operation of municipal government services. Direct supervision and detailed instructions are received from a Foreman, Assistant Foreman, Crew Leader, Maintenance Worker-3 or other assigned supervisor. The incumbent may be required to work weekends as per schedule in department assigned. The Maintenance Worker-1 performs related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: In the Public Works Department: * Digs ditches and trenches; Shovels snow and spreads sand, cinders and salt on icy streets; Assists cement finishers and pavers by mixing concrete and setting forms; Removes and repairs sidewalks as directed; Loads trucks with garbage and refuse; Assists with raking and shoveling blacktop;
In Automotive Division: * Sweeps and cleans shops; shovels snow from exits; * Helps out in storeroom as laborer when needed.
In the Parks Department: * Prepares soil for planting trees, flowers, etc.; * Shovels snow at parks, buildings, ramps/lots, etc; * Performs manual work in connection with maintenance of parks, golf course, ramps/lots and other recreational facilities; * Operates spreaders and mowers; * Mows grass; * Uses weed whip, hand rake and rototiller; * Changes cups on putting greens; * Picks up balls on Golf Course using ball picker; * Cleans buildings and equipment; * Assists Trades with drains, etc.; * Performs laborer duties as assigned.
In All Divisions: * Sweeps, mops, strips, waxes floors, vacuums rugs; Cleans and dusts furniture and equipment, washes lavatory fixtures, brick and tile walls, venetian blinds; * Washes windows, light globes, glass partitions and transoms; * Empties refuse receptacles; * Replenishes rest room supplies; * Disposes of trash; * Makes certain doors and windows are properly secured before leaving cleaning station.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: * Willingness to perform routine manual work; * Ability to lift heavy objects; * Willingness to work under all weather conditions; * Ability to operate motorized equipment, physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Any satisfactory combination of training and experience which will indicate ability to do the work.
